We are removing the original steering box from my 1970 Road Runner. I installed new borgeson steering box and borgeson coupling.when removed steering column and reinstalled the steering shaft only goes in coupling and inch. It says to cut shaft but mine is short. Has anyone ever had this situation. Also the lockout on column spins sometimes and will not let key release until rotated back back under hood by hand.

I can’t answer your question about length but as far as key lock goes either wire it up under the hood so it doesn’t move or if it does move you can rotate the column part just behind the key by hand to release instead of having to get under the hood.

Has your column shaft been collapsed? There should be shear pins in the shaft "its plastic" so that if in a frontal collision the steering shaft will collapse. Try pulling the shaft out from the column. While they may look in tact they may very well be already collapsed/sheared off, try pulling the lower double D shaft out of the upper portion.

Should look something like this.

Here is what they look like in 2 pieces.

I do not know if ever collapsed tried pulling did not move. I will try and take a small punch and slide it down. If it does not move I was just going to weld it to coupler.

Your column has collapsed. Slide out the inner section, drill/tap a 1/8” hole through both inner/outer sections & run a plastic bolt (plumbing supply hardware) and trim off excess on both sides…done
