1970 Super Sketchy

06/07/26 Update

So although it’s not exciting or sexy… I moved a bunch of cars around in my yard and had to cut the grass (takes like 4hours). We’ve had so much rain my grass was starting to look like the VZ where hiding ready to attack.

I got the Bee up on my outdoor pad and lift. Trust me that alone is a project. I need to use my Dixie Chopper mower to move it around and we have the no-see-ums flys all over so.. that’s fun too.

The car is up in the air and here are some pictures of the underside.
The seller took his time to spray everything in flat black to cover up everything. You can still see the repairs though…. To my untrained eye, it doesn’t really look that bad. Only worry spot is the front frame rail that was for sure touched.. I think I’ll lightly grind to see what’s really going on there.

Please give me your raw thoughts/comments

The rear end and its numbers.
That’s 294 on the tag.. no idea

Not 100% on the carrier

I don’t really know how to label the pictures but these are the front frame rails L/R

I guess this was cut and a donor front end welded? Or maybe the frame was just connected? Not sure.

Basic patch panels.. and again to me they don’t look like a lot was cut out (and maybe that’s a good thing to show the car wasn’t that bad???)

The whole car except the trunk lid was GoOrange and the trunk was Sublime.

You can’t really tell about the one fender but the body, doors, hood and 90% of the front end you can clearly see the GoOrange.

I gotta say after looking at the Sublime it sure has grown on my..

I know I said I was gonna have the car stripped but I’m afraid it’ll get stripped and put in 2-part Epoxy and… sit..
I’m going to install the level 3 kit from US Car for support right now and figure out what I wanna do.. I’m 100% all over the place.

I do have the grill inserts coming from Hawaii (please remember they where donated to me)..
and I need to send a check out to an other member tomorrow for the rest of the headlight / front turn signals.. I’ll still need the lenses but my slush funds are thin as a hens tooth.

You all have a great week and thanks for the motivation

Since the car is somewhat of a rolling shell, you may be wise to get some blasting or other type of stripping done to remove the lipstick/bandaids and see what you truly have to deal with.

Not to be a Debby Downer, but you have a huge project ahead of you. That car needs new front frame rails, among other things, I am sure. Maybe you should take a little break from buying parts and fully access what condition this car is in before proceeding. This is just my opinion of course and nothing negative is intended.

Well, that’s why I posted.. this is all new to me.. not welding but these cars in general..

I’ll grind a bit to expose what’s really going on and take some pictures before I do anything.

Obviously stripping the car down is the only real way of knowing what’s going on and what’s safe and what’s not.. I was trying to avoid that till I sorted out what I even wanna do with the car. Gen2 or gen3… I really was leaning to Gen 2 but I got a smoking deal on a 6.4 if I wanna go that route.. and I would mock the motor/trans in and do any modifications before… but I guess I could just dip it, get it in epoxy and then do all that..
as I get upset… it’s still better then working in someone’s house.. it’s mine

Thanks for the reality check up

Any info on the rear and carrier?
A 70 Super Bee would have come from the factory with the larger pinion 742 or 489 center chunk.

Perfect.. just an other “gotchya “

I’ve been on YT the past couple hours watching (and rewatching) replacing the frame rails.. it’s certainly a project. Biggest issue I have is I’ve never worked on this car and as my title say.. the Bee sure is SKETCHY..! I’ve never even worked on a subframe car before. I can weld and I’m pretty proficient and I’m sure I’ll suffer through it and in the end it’ll be fine but it’s not looking easy for sure.
I do think it might be best (and I really don’t want too) to just strip the car down and have it dipped and just start over and see what I’m really working with. Don’t get me wrong I was outside looking at the frame rails just trying to convince myself to grind it all down and reweld what I end up with and.. yes I said this in my head.. “I could just cover it up with some Mar-Glass and no one will know”.. that’s bullshit for a car I really wanna keep and make kinda nice. And forgetting the nice.. safe. I can’t put a 500+ anything in it if it’s not safe.

Yea I’d definitely assess the rails. You don’t want to be welding new aftermarket suspension parts to junk rails. I replaced the front and rear rails on my Charger having never done any work like that before. I bought clean original rails vs. new AMD rails just because I needed everything to be apples to apples as far as fitment because it was my first time and didn’t need any extra variables. I did the rear rails first and then the fronts. I leveled the car on jack stands and then made a fixture out of 1” square tubing. I made a perimeter of tubing on the floor, then did risers off of the perimeter to connect to the rails. I also had risers that went up and welded to the rocker pinch welds. Then I added a bunch of tubing across to triangulate and strengthen it all. I used 2” angle iron that sat on the bottom and outsides along the rails at each riser. I pulled one rail out at a time, fit the new one in and clamped the rail to the fixture at my angle iron then welded it in. It worked out really well

Thanks for the encouragement.. I am very handy but it seems anytime I work on anything of my own I over think it and make it over complicated..

Trust me, I'm the same exact way!!

Welcome to the forum, looks like a solid project. I will say that I instantly become suspicious of sellers who play stupid with “I don’t know”, usually means they are hiding something. Good luck on the build.
