What a mess this day was. On my 72, the last oil change. Prepared to do a mess free oil change. I took my time, wrapping the exhausts with plastic wrap to keep oil off when taking the filter off my 318. Oil filter has to come out from the engine compartment, not down. Did everything to insure no spill. Yeh that worked. NOT. Just as i was starting to bring the filter up around the exhaust manifolds, I dropped it. You can guess the mess under the car. Then the second mess, was when i was putting the new oil in. The funnel was standing up and seemed to be secure. Half way thru the first Qt of oil, the funnel feel to the side. So much preparing and taking time ended up with two spills. Hope this has not happened to any one else.

As much as I try, this happens 50% of the time
The oil filter always seems to snag on something
      I feel your pain

Spilled the drain pan last oil change as I moved it from under the drain plug to the filter. What a mess.

              Ha Ha...
I was in a rush one morning changing the oil (Mobil 1) in the Tundra and also multi-tasking BTW
Yup, new filter on, (WIX) and poured the oil in up top....only to remember after the 4th Quart that I didn't install the drain plug!
              Ha Ha
PS: thank GOD it wasn't the RAM 2500 4X4 Cummings Longhorn !!

                  Yup,
Some cars made during the Heyday (1960s and very early 70s) took "Special Oil"
                  And Special Gas
Oil was typically a Race type oil, like a Straight Weight 50W or 30W
Gasoline was typically a 104 Octane

                    It is a joke, man....
Sometimes a joke is clever when it refers to a real life event of some kind.
You know, like when people claim to "Special Order" a car that had no chance of being built for a host of reasons.

Yeah, that was an expensive oil change!
                      And you know Robert?
I was doing so good on my projects that morning with my time crunch...
I was trying to get finished quickly to go some where
( I ended up going to NAPA Ha Ha!)

But in my years of experience,
In a sense, yes...factory Race Cars did use what could be determined as a special oil
For High Performance type driving, which meant RACE
Typically High Compression/Solid Lifter type valve train etc.

Not anymore unless you consider 0W-5W special, as on the high tech Hondas, Toyotas, etc........

When slant 6 owners change the oil & filter they just assume they're going to make a mess!

On another note my new truck takes 7 quarts which was pretty much exactly what my pan held... Only used that one once because trying to move it started spilling all over trying to dump it in a jug.. Luckily in a stone driveway used a rag then kicked fresh stones over it...
