I have been battling a hood/fender shake on my 1972 Road Runner for quite some time now. Dependant on the Road Conditions, the fenders and hood will shake or almost hopp up and down. I have made many adjustments and added bumpers to the hood etc with some improvement but still not 100%. I am running the fender to firewall braces etc.. Everything seems very tight in the garage but on some rough roads its very noticable. What should I look for? Any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks

I've got a '72, and this sounds...a little bizarre. If all the metal's bolted down the way it should be, the hinges are tight and the hood's latched, etc., then it could be your perception that the topside is shaking when it's actually the underside that's loose. Have you put the car up on a hoist and yanked on all of the front suspension and steering pieces to make sure that they're as tight as the body panels?

Your hood bolt holes could be worn out our your hinges could be worn out as well.

I thought thread was a Joke with a Big *** BB engine causing it.

Doesn't sound right to me

Are you sure you have all the rubbers installed and those funny little spring loaded plastic centering deals for the hood mounted on the fenders ? :eusa_think:

This is my car, I do have the bumpers and wedges in place.. Just stumped on what to do. Its only in some situations to, not all the time..

Looks like the car is in great shape. Are all of the air grabber parts bolted down (up) tight?

I have that problem also on my 72. The only thing I can is the right side frnder tab that bolts to the firewall has cracked in half but everything else is connected.

If all else is tight, fenders, core support, hinges to hood and fender, Check the hinges themselves, as mentioned, grab the bottom of the hood back by firewall and shake side to side, maybe the hinges themselves are bad where they go together. To do this and all is tight bigredbird might be on something, maybe it isint the hood, but something loose elsewhere. Very beautiful car.. Ive seen this happen, never Mopar but other hinges that were worn out enough to make them shake, just sayin..

Might be the engine in the aircleaner hood combo for the air grabber doing it too.

Nice car by the way very nice

I am continuing to make adjustments to the hood and fenders in atempt to cure the problem, one thing is for sure, the braces that go from the center of the firewall to the inner fenders make a huge improvment! , without them, the shake is much worse... Right now I am focusing and being sure the hood is as tight as possible by hinge and bumper stop adjustments. Little by little it is getting better, thanks for all the tips so far!

It's a pile of total junk. Crate it up and send it to me for proper disposal.

:headbang:

Beautiful car. :love2:

Do you get any other type of vibration? Maybe a separated tire or out of balance wheel?

hood latch is in place!

Take a look at this photo:

See that lobotomy hook hanging down in the center front underside of the hood? Here's a better pic (not black on black) from my own car:

There really doesn't appear to be one of these on your hood.

That's what it looks like to me as well.

I can see the emergency catch is missing, but it shouldn't cause any of these problems.

bigredbird, Those give great scars on the top of your head man..

You bet! That's why I call it a lobotomy hook. I keep a cut tennis ball over mine when I'm working underhood. Wonder if Chrysler ever got sued for the design?

Ive thought about it a few times in the last 40 years!
