That 78 might have the 11.75" pin type caliper adapters ?

That points ignition in the fury, might mean the engine was pulled from something a lot older. There is an early 318 in my Monoco right now previous owner put in with points. Runs great, but you are right about the maint. part of it. For a daily that would be a hassle. Sometimes you run across people swapping in pre-smog era engines. It is super common in Ford land, and was the thing to do in chebby land(Olds rocket 350 was always the go to) in the 80's.
