So I just got my tach working. 80mph at 3000rpm with 28 tall tires. Converter flashes to 2800 in 3rd. Figure a 6% slip. Figures closest to a 2.93. It was a factory 318 auto. No wonder it’s a freeway flyer. Since I have a small pinion carrier I will upgrade to a large pinion with a posi or locker. Maybe 3.91s for street/strip.

3:91s are perfect for around town and backroads to 55/60 mph, BUT NOT HIGHWAYS! I have a 4 speed and at 70 mph taching at ~ 3900 RPMs. A 3:55 would be better for the street. I drive my car and wish I had a 5th gear, always avoid highways on cruises.

Mostly cruise night stuff and drags. Just never heard of 2.93s before.

Maybe 2.94 as it is a common 8-3/4 ratio.

Based on your intensions 3.91 or 4.10’s will serve you well. You will also want to avoid any highway with more than 55 mph speed limit.

If your 741 / 2.94 ? Gear set is in good shape. Keep it in one piece.
Get a 742 or 489 for your new gear set.
You may want to run the power tour ect. Someday. :drinks:

Years ago I had a Camaro. 383 stroked small block, 4 speed and a 2.56 posi. That car was faster than the speed of sound. A little rough on the clutch but it was fun!!!

A friend had a late 70s camaro with a 305 and 2.56 gear.
We drove home from Bowling at 1 a.m. one night on the freeway at 75.....in second gear .
Neither of us noticed till we got off the freeway.

I swear that pinion was 1/2 the size of the ring gear.

I have a Mopar 8.75 sure grip with 3.55’s in my ‘58 Apache, it’s a nice all around ratio for a cruiser. Acceleration is decent and rpm’s on the interstate are tolerable.

Same here in my 69 roadrunner but I stay off I-40.
