22" vs. 26"

Hey All,

I'm trying to sort out my cooling options as I'm prepping to swap out a 383 in my 69 RR for a Stroked 440 (522) The rad and opening currently in my car are 22"... which seems to be the logical choice to me right now is to go with Wizard Cooling's 22" application with the Upgraded Core http://wizardcooling.com/125-tube-core-upgrade

Soooo... with this application is the 4-9" low profile electric fan/shroud assembly rated at 2400 cfm enough or should I be doing a shroud and 6 blade fan?


Also what about changing to a 26" rad.... seems to be more trouble than it's worth with the opening for 22" and the battery/tray in the way. Has anyone else run into similar if so what supplier/combination did you go with?

I had a G coded 67 coronet with a 22 inch rad,went to 26 and it took about 20 minutes to mount the rad.(did the same on a 67 satellite) Used a new champion rad and 6 blade steel fan with shroud. Rad cost 219 and my 498 stroker ran cool

You may want to try Smith radiator in Indiana. Retro look direct bolt in all aluminum

i always go with the 26", they still hold more water and provide extra surface area even if you dont cut the opening bigger. rr is still the smaller opening. the dart i opened up.

I bought and installed the 22" Wizard in my 440 powered Belvedere. Very very nice peice with quality tig welds. Everyone thats seen it has asked about it and commented on the build quality. First aftermarket peice I've bought that dropped right onto the factory bolt holes and rad hoses lined up.

Cruising along the car runs at 180* or a touch less, unfortunatly I went the mechanical fan route and the replacement heavy duty Hayden fan clutch will not clear with the bigger core tubes in my 67' and the car will climb in temp after heat soak and idleing for 15mins. This is not the rad's fault but an airflow issue.

Currently contemplating their electric fan set-up myself.

I can also say that the new wizard with bigger tubes took about 1liter of water more roughly then the stock style 26" rad did that was half hidden behind the rad support.

I just got off the phone with Wizard and they said the dual core with upgraded cores would work fine for my application and numbers. He also recommended their electric fan setup which I'm interested in but I gather a lot of people on here don't think 2800 CFM is enough to do the job from what I've read (the guy from Wizard assured me it was plenty)

Glad to hear you're happy with your rad! I'm just trying to get the info from my builder right now on inlet/outlet locations then will be ready to place an order unless someone here convinces me otherwise

the one in the RR is out of a 77 powerwagon, i also have the truck water pump housing with a high volume milodon pump. use a factory clutch fan. that car will literately idle all day long in traffic on a hot day and never go over 185. actually did that last week at the hines drive cruise.

the dart has a smith radiator like the guy above mentioned. very comparable to a wizzard. i run a flex fan on it, clutch fan wont fit. i also run two small pushers in front that ill use if i hit alot of stop and go traffic.

OK the water pump is another question so forgive me if this sounds stupid but if I use the housing off of my 383 on the new 440 Block then my output location on the rad would be exactly the same as the one I have now correct?

Is the shroud also from Champion?

no...actually a 70 RR shroud . Rad had the fittings and it worked perfect..actually the fan is too far in the shroud but my 440 stays cool anywhere/any temp of the day so I don't bother with it
