then with their 62 Plymouth wagon (RIP my good friends).
 
back in the early '70's carter (back when carter was carter) tried to get into the performance market with a set of carbs. they had a 500cfm (not to be confused with edelbrocks 500), a 600cfm, and a 750 cfm. they marketed these carbs for use with inline dual quad applications. the 500 had the correct throttle bore/venturi for those small bore chrysler intakes. the downside to them was the fuel inlet was on the throttle side and the throttle levers were a little goofy in my opinion. those two things wouldn't be deal breakers because tops on the the old carter and edelbrocks should be able to swap. the old carter 500 had velocity controlled secondaries which would be great with the old intake. the football air cleaners won't fit but the cheapy 6" round aftermarket would do nicely. occasionally these carbs come up on ebay or swap meets and i do believe the old sand cast carters are better made than the newer edelbrocks. this would be a more affordable alternative to chasing OEM carbs/air cleaners, etc. none of the edelbrocks match the secondary bore size in the old factory intake. the 500 edelbrock is just a 600 with a screwed primary cluster.
 
Finding truly suitable carbs for an intake that doesn't work very good may not be time and money well spent. Use an edelbrock ch28 on the 440 and tell everyone it's a 385hp 413.View attachment 1547351

Lew I didn't know you had that setup on your '65.

I see you have it set up as a progressive throttle. I set mine up that way and the front four cylinders were running way too lean. Using a IR gun they were 200 degs hotter than the rear four cylinders. I tried to research how the factory jetted or had a door in the bottom throttle plate or what it takes to keep the front cylinders running the same as the rear. I ended up just setting the linkage one to one and everything runs fine.

I'm using the old factory 413 manifold. Opened up the primary holes. There would be a step in the bore using any spacer. Used the 1405 600 cfm Eldebrock carbs with a 1/2 Phenolic wood spacer. Had to remove the bottom of the throttle leaver on the front carb for clearance. Had to raise the throttle cable bracket and modify the one piece throttle pressure rod to the trans. (Still looking for an original one from a letter car with a 413) It all works great and it has plenty of power as far I'm concerned. Eldebrock makes it pretty easy to set up two fours with their linkage and fuel line kits.

I've been running the ch28 with two 600's for about 9yrs. It's the best all around intake/carb combo I've ever used. Power is good enough for me, low maintenance, very reliable.
I don't have any noticeable distribution issues. Plugs burn pretty clean and evenly from cylinder to cylinder. Hughes says the manifold doesn't have a bunch of distribution issues and I believe it. The jetting is the same for both carbs but in fairness I'm not set up to check WOT air fuel mixes. I have a good ignition curve and use a vacuum advance. I can get the plugs to burn scary clean. I've never had an engine were exhaust gas Temps were perfect between each cylinder. I just read the plugs and adjust the mixture screws to get even low speed burn.
One of these days I'd like to put a pair of 750's on it. I think I'd like them better. Just too cheap to pop for a new pair.
