Bunch of small ones are good from what I understand... If those plates dont release some presure every now and then it builds up then you have a huge quake like in Alaska 64', SF 89'... But there is an aweful lot of activity going on in the Pacific rim...

If there is a big one, plenty of rebuilding jobs will be created. I guess you'd call them Pacific Rim jobs.

When I told my mom I wanted to move to the Pac NW she sent me an article, one she had saved from a magazine and cut out. Anyway it was all about the Cascadia fault and how the seismologists have figured out that it has "gone off" about every 250ish years. Well it hasn't gone off for somewhere around 800 I think.. so it is way overdue. They went on to say that if it does go off.. it'll destroy everything from Portland on up to Seattle, west of the Cascades. Nothing there is ready for a major earthquake, nothing. Then the resulting tidal wave will destroy anything/anybody who's left after the quake. Pretty bleak stuff. Makes me think about staying east of the Cascades.

I've heard similar things about the fault that runs under St Louis.

The one near St louis is the New Madrid fault zone. Very active and responsible for altering the path of the Mississippi river.

Yep, just watched a documentary about both of them. Yes, the Cascadia fault IS way oberdue and in fact they have been measuring with GPS how much the land is rising, 3/4 inch per year, and how much it's moving inland away from the fault. The Pacific shelf is driving under the coast and pushing it up. It's currently stuck together but when it slides free the pushed up land will spring down and out towards the ocean at the same time. Bad ju-ju.

You are so right all that is really discussed is how man affects the planet. Evolution has never stopped it just slows periodically

Man, don't even say that. I live right along the coast and have felt several smaller quakes, but I'm hoping that I will be long gone before the big one hits. I looked into adding earthquake insurance to my homeowners a few years ago but it is very expensive even for a stick built house. I just flat can't afford it.

Not if but when it happens the old *** dams will break and flood from Eugene to Portland. I am about 50 miles from the coast with the Coastal range between but it is only about 1500 ft elevation. Going to keep my boat gassed and ready to ride it out. Coastal town like Seaside will be GONE.
