318 to 360

340 vs 360 . The way I look at it , If you have the $$$ and can find one , the 340 is probably the better deal because of the fact to get it to perform you have to spend less to do it . 360's come much cheaper but you have to spend to get them to perform.

I disagree and find the extremely humorous.

It also depends on what you want to use it for . For racing I'd go 340 . More top end power . If you just want something to play with on the street , go to car shows , etc . you can't beat a 360 . Low end Torque is what you want on the street.

I agree with this, except the low end part directed at a 360. While the extra arm of the engine will certainly help out with torque and that is indeed what you want on the street as opposed to high rpm power (6500+ rpm), the 360 is an excellent choice because it will make more torque than a 340 and produce very very similar HP to the 340 only at a lower rpm.

The 360 will also cost less than a 340. Do your home work and don't believe this guy above!!!!!!!!!!

Cost savings Come with the Pistons being cheaper and everything else is the same.
If the extra stroke doesn't allow for the high 6500+ rpm power that a 340 makes, then you need to upgrade the valve springs.

Everyone will always point to the 340 as the supreme HP maker and since it has a short stroke it should or something is very wrong. But where do you want to make top HP?

Go for the extra natural stroke of the 360. Get off the line quicker and easier with it and get to the high HP mark before the 340 does. It's a win win in most cases!

Well screw this... I rebuilt the 318 and I bought a 440 to swap in sometime in the future. I don't care about mpg, all I want is a ton of torque and horsepower. My 360 will probably be put into my next project car unless I find 340 (IMO much better engine)

I have nothing against either engine . I have a 360 in one of my 73 Chargers and am looking for a 340 for my son's 73 Rallye (when money permits . They both have plus and minuses about them .

340 vs 360 in a street car, no race environment, just general useage and/or high performance, ether is really very good. I would favor a 340 in a lighter car like an A body or lightened E body with manual everything.
The short stroke and big bore, for a small block (3.31 X 4.04) makes for a nice rpm machine.
The longer stroke for the 360 (3.58 X 4.00) works very well in anything.

The only small block I've never had was a 273....and so far the fastest running small block was 318 in a Demon turning 13.50's. Stock bottom end and low compression using 360 heads with some port work but it was in a 2950 lb car. It was a dog on the bottom end with 2.2 60 foots. The 340 was in a 71 Cuda and turned 14.0 and except for headers, it was stock. Car weighed 3560 and had 4.10 gears. The 360 was a Super Coupe engine in a 79 SWB pickup with headers and Torker intake and the truck went 51.50 with 3.23's and 25" tall tires on the rear. And I'm not afraid of cast crank engines from Chrysler. GM gave them a bad name many years ago....not Chrysler. So far, my fastest cars were powered by big blocks. :D
