So took a pair of 587 heads i had on shelf to machine shop this weekend and no go.. so my question is have this fresh 360 short block 0.060 over, fresh 318 heads(pictured). how shitty will this thing run with the stock cam? can i run a mild cam with the 318 heads and stock springs or would that not even matter? i cant afford aluminum heads or any other expensive heads right now so i was thinking of just running the 360 as is till i can afford and swap later because my 318 is wore out...

    yalls opinions please 360heads x 2.jpg 360heads x1.jpg 360heads.jpg bad1.jpg

I wouldn't use the 318 heads on a 360 for 2 reasons, small valves and small ports. those 2 issues can be fixed with a lot of porting and machine work but a lot of $$$ to make it so.

You could use them and they will work just not well. A lot of work just to make a engine run.

I have been scouting for a pair of heads for you. There are often sets for sale on FABO. Not at this time i'm afraid. Were your heads cracked? I would imagine any local salvage yard could come up with a pair for you. If not a wanted ad here might score. You would have to pay shipping though. Not cheap on a pair of heads.

not cracked that i know of. i am almost determined to get some new valves, find some single springs that will work with my cam and just have them decked and go, but the exhaust guides i think might be worn and also they dont have hardened seats. headsafter.jpg headsafter1.jpg headsafter2.jpg headsafter3.jpg

You could wrap $1000 up in a set of heads in a hurry without getting too fancy. Hardened seats, guides, new valves, springs and hardware.

Yes those work well. You probably need new lifters as well. Magnum rockers oil through the pushrods as you know. Those heads are prone to cracking between the seats.

Those 360 heads should already have hardened seats, wasn’t 74 the first year for the 360?

I think I’m lucky and have an old sprint car guy that does my machine work for cheap. The last 360 I did had heads that looked that way. You can reuse springs and shim them. Valves a can be reused and cut as long as there not bent. Guides can be nurled in a pinch.

You need to find a machine shop that the dirt track guys use. They machine the crap out of everything just to keep racing the next weekend.

The last 360 I did had the following:
        - block and heads cooked
        - heads had fly cut just to true them up
        - full valve job
        - 12 guides needed done
        - valve springs checked and shimmed
        - .030 overbore
        - magged everything
        - polished crank

        All for $600

You could also look for a set of 360 heads from the last 3 or 4 years of LA production. The part # ends in 308. Probably a lot cheaper than a set of used Magnums. Also, LA intakes also bolt right up.

71 was the 1st year for the 360.
Btw, remember you will need to use a 360 torque converter as the 360 is balanced using the converter.

so you have a worn out low compression 360 and a fresh set of 318 heads
valves do not wiggle much and new stem seals
            put them on and enjoy
you can save and do other heads later
            you can use a b & m flexplate instead of a 360 converter
I would not spend much money on Iron 360 heads
but the late ones are the best cores to start with or Magnums
The EQ heads are not currently availale but may be again shortly

I'd just run the 318 heads on the 360 block, not ideal but will work OK. Stay very mild on cam choice.

I'm running into the same problem, kinda. I'm preparing to build a 360 stroker and I keep hearing that I can buy a pair of aluminum heads for around $1000. I'll be damned if I can find them.
