Hi guys,

I did a search but did not find a thread on this - correct me if wrong.

I noticed most of the 1/4 mile guys are running something other than a 383.

Looking to see what 383 combo's people are using and what they can do in the 1/4 mile.

Let's keep it to standard stroke (no-strokers).

Might be boring but it gives me some insight of what my engine could be.

Thank you.

Here is my set-up:

70 RR

383 .030 Over
TRW L2293 Pistons
Doug Herbert Cam 245 @ .050, .510 lift (I think)
1 3/4 Headers
3" Exhaust
Auto w/2800 RPM Stall (RMVB)
4.10 Rear End
Holley 770 Avenger
Edelbrock RPM Heads and Intake, 1.5 Roller Rockers
Electric Fuel Pump
MSD 6AL and Probillet Dist.

13.22 @ 100.94 This was with stock iron heads before the edelbrock intake and head install - should be quicker now.

I ran this in a 67 GTX

1968 383 block
1972 440 standard bore pistons with a zero deck height
Stock steel crank
Original 375 HP 440 cam
Rotating assembly balanced
906 heads with old fashioned 3 angle valve job
Stock 338 HP intake with an AVS
67 HP exhaust manifolds with 2 1/2 inch exhaust
Factory Dual Point Distributor and chrome Accel coil
A727 trans with shift kit 2800 RPM stall speed converter
3.55 gear in a 8 3/4 rear axle

Best ET 13.20 @ 104

This was sweet running motor. It is smooth and likes to run on the top end.

Thinking of building a near stock / slightly upgraded 383 at some point (w/stock HP exhaust), so definitely interested in this thread.

Not a boring thread in my opinion.. The last 2 I built ran 121-122 mph in an all steel 67 Charger. (11.40s with a bum converter- 1.8 ish 60 fts) Should have been a high ten with a scienced out drivetrain but it was built for an 11.50 class. One had chrysler max wedges and one had indys. Both had sub .600 flat tappets. Both had the TRW poptops. Car was usually around 35-3600 race weight
My stock street car 67 ran best of 13.1 @105.

1967 2bbl 383 (59,000 miles) Installed in a 1966 Charger, changed the 2bbl cast iron intake to a MP duel plane 4bbl, with Holley 750 vac 2nds, and straight duel exhaust(no X or H balance tube) and Hooker super comp headers. and Mopar electronic ignition chrome box, Mopar blaster coil, smog 400 distributer 3.23 sure grip 14inch cooper cobras
best run 14.2 @98mph. avg runs 14.4 @97
That had the stock 2bbl cam, nothing touched inside the engine.

I just posted photos of this car yesterday, on a different topic,LOL
Sorry they are photos of photos, so they are blurry.
In real life the one of me returning from a run with the 14.2@98mph time on the score board is one of my favorite.
From 2002 or 2003, Hemmings MUSCLEPALOOZA #1!!!!

All depends on your use, basic street driving, street/strip, strip? How much gear do you want/tolerate? Converter? 4 Spd? Iron heads?
383 with iron heads needs at least basic pocket porting, maybe a bit more. Compression ratio depends on what gas you will run/availability. If you have gear & converter camshaft can get pretty big(mid 500 lift if the pistons have the valve reliefs, duration depends on the grind design). With stock 383 steel crank, mag it, shot peen the rod, good high strength rod bolts. 3 bolt cam with full roller timing chain. If it's a street piece back down on gear, cam, converter can stay "moderate". For durability I'd mag the crank, shot peen the rods & use real good rod bolts for sure.

Good thread ! I just tore down a 1965 383 that is std bore and will be a winter months project.
Thanks Bad b rad for posting that hot rod link, good reading.

I am a BIG 383 fan.
I love the 440 also, but I have had the most fun for the least amount of $$ with 383's.
It is tempting to grab a 400 block and a 440 source stroker kit and take it to around 493/500CI, use the 440 source heads, painted, and stock 4bbl exhaust manifolds, and tell every one its a 383 Road Runner/Magnum engine, LOL!!!!

Heck 383's will run real good. Thats the eng that held its own in the 60's and 70's for many Mopars. Most of the street Mopars ran 383's in the 60's and 70's including me. I ran a very stock 383 Dart as the bottom end was a stock 383 parts including the crank , pistons and rods. Then I ran mildly ported 452 heads as I cut them to raise the comp ratio to a true 9.5. I used the old MP cam with .484 lift and 284 advertised duration. It had a 727 that I added a turbo Action 10" converter to and put a reverse manual valve body in and it has 3.91 gears. The car weighed 3640 lbs with my son in it and ran a best of 12.31 @ 110 mph. It was a nice running mild 383 combo. Then we ran just about the same combo in my buddies 68 Cuda with the MP .557 cam and 4.57 gears and it ran a best of 11.41 @ 118 mph. They were both nice running mild 383 combo's. Ron

I have a 10 to 1 383 with Edelbrock E Street heads, Comp Cam 275/287, 525/525 lift, headers, Trick Flow Track Heat intake, QF Race 750. 4000 stall street-strip 9.5 converter connected to a 727 with a brake, 4.10 gear in my heavy Coronet. Very strong combination, I put a line lock on the car and decided to upgrade the master cylinder and pro valve. Once it's back together I'll run it on a Wednesday night at Brainerd see how fast it is. On the transbrake and 2 step if I launch it at 3200 rpm it feels like a mid 12's car in it's current set up.
