Ok guys - first question for you on my 70 road runner build. I have the waterpump mocked up on the front of the 383 engine and I am looking at 4 holes on the top of the pump. I know two go for the heater hoses, but have two left over. One 5/8? hole between the two heater hose nipples on the passenger side and a 1/4? fine thread hole on the driver side top of water pump. Im guessing these are for temp senders, but why two holes? Does one just get plugged depending on which sender is used? My dash has a temp gauge.

Secondary question - since there is a temp gauge, is there also an idiot light in the dash? Or does the gauge replace the light?

thanks for your help!

The 1/4 fine thread driver's side hole should be for the dash temp gauge probe. The passenger side 5/8 hole should get plugged, however, if you are running an aftermarket temp gauge like an Autometer, that probe would go here. If you plug the 5/8 hole, the correct plug should be a recessed square fitting (see the MCG within the last few months that discussed the correct plug).

I'm assuming the 1970 waterpump is the same as a 1969 waterpump, becuase the above is based on the waterpump I'm using on my 1969 Bee. Here's a pic of my waterpump for comparison.

Excellent info!

short stack says THANK YOU!!

moving on to next question..

updated with picture of waterpump

thanks for the picture! I restore Corvettes to NCRS standards so I can appreciate your Orange paint on the neg battery cable! Love a true factory correct restoration - runs, drips, overspray and all. I also notice the different shades of your black on suspension vs. engine pulleys. Very nice!

My waterpump looks just like yours. I have a couple more questions about your photo. With only one grove w/p pump pulley, how do you plan to do both alternator and p.steering? What is the black round circle down low on the left side just in front of fuel pump?

thanks for the info

The crank pully is a dual groove pulley for the Alt/PS, two separate belts. The black cylinder connected to the fuel pump is the vapor separator that was used on Six Pack cars.

Thanks for the nice comments. I was really adamant about trying to get the engine as close to factory as possibe, minus the valve covers and headers, but was trying for everything else (i.e., neg battery cable, heater hoses, power steering hoses, etc). And my Bee is no where near restoration correct, just trying to get the noticeable things correct.

I'll post up a better picture tonight with the temp probes actually hooked up now.

This might show the pulleys a lil better.

My alt & WP belt pic

alt belt goes around WP, ALT, & Crankshaft pulley (inside belt)
PS belt just goes around PS & crankshaft (outside belt)

so riddle me this: This car came to me with a set of two groove aluminum CFV pulleys for the water pump and crank. Can I run one belt - crank / waterpump / alternator, and the other belt crank / waterpump / power steering? There is not enough room to go direct crank / power steering for the belt to fit between the crank pulley and the bottom of the w/p pulley. OR does this get something running the wrong direction???

Thanks

you can run 2 belts as long as both crank groove pulleys are the exact same size. If they are not, then you will get belt squeal from the belts fighting each other. If they are different, you are gonna have to find a single groove WP pulley.

post a pic of yer crank pulley if ya can

Why isn't there enough room for the crank to PS belt? Are the correct Alt and PS mounting brackets being used?

Oh, and if need be, if you need a crank pulley with both grooves the same size, I have one; came off the old motor. For my new motor, the crank pulley has two different size grooves: the alt groove is smaller than the PS groove.

he said he has a 2 groove WP pulley also ....if I read it right....he needs to post pic of his crank pulley to determine the next step

way too much info there....

Hmmm...........I assumed there was a wrong part somewhere, didn't know that were actual two groove WP pulleys. Are the two groove WP pulleys for a/c cars?

no...AC cars are a whole different animal..they use a 4 groove crank pulley....

I ferget what the large 2 groove WP pulley fits....

Mine are AFTERMARKET - Aluminum CFV I think. Not my choice for sure, but something that the guy Im putting the car together for really wants.

So, I want to run inside pulley to alternator and outside to p/steering. Will this make alt and p/s run in the correct direction?

That's what I was thinking too. When I ditched the non-op a/c on my 440 I changed ALL the pulleys (incl the alt), but am kinda fuzzy on the deets...it was 10+ yrs ago. I'm only slightly less fuzzy on what I did yesterday...or this morning.

If only the guy would have looked in the Year One catalog first, they have (what looks to be) all the correct pulleys in both black AND Chrome.

Ok, just installed my Gates belts tonight and here's some pics.

And the waterpump fittings.

440beep - so from your last pic you are showing fittings in both w/p holes - Small one goes to idiot light? Big one with AN fittings to aftermarket temp gauge? Do you NOT have factory temp gauge?
