Is there a way to identify a big block transmission from a small block transmission? I am on the road on the moment and don't have my Motors book with me. I will be looking at a 4-speed transmission for a small block a-body and am thinking I can swap the tailshaft for my b-body one and put in some fluid and run it. Am I missing anything? Thanks in advance

318/340 & 383 all use a 23 spline 440 & 426 use an 18 spline....

A body is shorter than B & E..

Early used a flange rather than a slip yoke...

You are missing the size of the front bearing retainer to bell housing size. SB is usually smallest, 68 and newer BB trans are one size bigger than that.

What bellhousing are you using? What size is the hole in back? What year is your BB trans you want to swap in? What size is the front bearing retainer?

you would need to swap tail shaft and housing. Means a complete tear down of the trans.

My understanding is all 23 splines have a 307 front bearing & use the same bolt pattern to mount the bearing retainer so you can swap the bearing retainer to match your bell housing...

23 spline trans do not all have a 307 front bearing.

A 68-69 383 23 spline uses the same bellhousing as a 440. 308 bearing.

All 1970 383, 440, & 426 hemi engines use the same bellhousing. 308 bearing
