440 Engine With Stock Hemi Oil Pan

I have a 1969 440 cylinder block and just installed the larger stock B body 426 Hemi oil pan. Will the original 440 dipstick and tube be okay or do I need to change it? I want to make sure the oil level reads correctly.

Not sure if dipsticks are different, but from the top of the pan, bottom of the block, a quart low is a quart low. Regardless of how much the pan holds.

Your original dipstick should be fine. The extra capacity of the Hemi pan is in the depth and size of the pan. The Hemi pan is 6 quarts with the long filter, so I would just check that against the dipstick to be sure, when installed.

When you fill with oil, just put five quarts in and check the level. Should be close to the full mark.

The stock style pickup should touch the pan bottom.

Pick up needs to be changed but the dipstick is fine

When I built my 440 I used the hemi pan and a new Mr Gasket Chrome dipstick
It measured a quart low with 6 quarts oil in her, a new filter on, and run for a moment
We watched it but I didn't want to put 7 quarts in her
So we measured the difference on the stick and cut the tube off
It only took a few minutes and now it reads correctly

Yep, I changed the oil pickup tube to match the oil pan. Just wasn’t sure about the dipstick and tube.
