I've been finetuning the 440 in my 66 Coronet 2dr sedan for some time and yesterday I took the car to a chassis dyno to do some final tuning and see how it would perform.
In the past months I checked out what kind of cam is installed, which should probably be a mp purple cam with 0.484" lift and a advertised duration of 239 @.50" lift.
It has a holley 4150 750 vacuum secondary single pumper carb with what appears to be a proform main body. The carb is mounted on top of a edelbrock performer rpm intake and breathes through an open K&N air cleaner.
I also measured cranking pressure which was around 165 psi on all cylinders.
Heads are 452's and exhaust gasses leave through some brand of long tube headers and a 2,5" H-pipe full exhaust system.
The final pull on the chassis dyno delivered a result of 341 hp @5300 rpm and 588 Nm (434 ft-lbs) @2900-3400 rpm.
The number is engine power, calculated by the dyno.
The car pulls hard on the road and is a blast to drive. It's not a race car. Street use only.

My question is: Are these respectable numbers for an engine like this?

Thanks,

Antoon

Here are two youtube links which will lead you to the pulls.

Enjoy.

Cool car!! If those are engine numbers....I'd be wondering. Stock HP 440 was rated at 375.

If it's a blast to drive & you enjoy it why worry about it???? I think it's respectable at the wheels probably close to 400 at the crank.
I think there are a lot of overestimating as well as emphisis on street numbers....I'm hoping to get north of 475 on mine but in reality it will probably be a little lower....
I just watched your video and I had to pause it but I saw it hit 455 pk...???...

I side with mike67.... Its just that steeeaady pull that feels so good!!!!

I was wondering about the 375 number as well, but was we all know those are not true street numbers and measured in a different way.
The power it has now is not at the wheels. It is at the crank as calculated by the dyno.

I don't really worry about it but I would merely like to show something that is real world and learn something about it from more knowleadgable guys.

Oh and btw, the gasoline used is a 95 octane blend with about 10% ethanol.

340ish at the rear wheels is fine. probably 430 at the crank. stock 375hp 440's never made anything close to 375hp. they were around 330hp actual horsepower at the crank; grossly over rated like most wedges were.

Again. 340 at the crank. Not the wheels. The dyno calculated that number from the drag the driveline had on the dyno. The drag was remarkably low at about 8-9%.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm still smiling. What did the dunk run cost? Just curious.

Edit-dyno run.. D--- spell check.

LOL! I don't know. Gas is now 1,50 euro per liter which translates to about 6$ per gallon:drama:

Oh wait, I see what you mean.
We spent about two hours on the dyno and that cost me 275 euro (300$)

You want to know what it makes? Take it to the track and see how it MPH. I had a friend "dyno" his 496 Duster. He was very disappointed with the 360hp reading he recieved. He was not disappointed when it ran 10.80@123 in street trim.

I agree, I've seen it the other way too. I remember a car where I worked making over 600 to the tire. Went to the track and ran 12.0 . Chassis dyno's are more of a tuning aid than anything.

dvw is spot on. Dyno is just a tuning aid, you can try different things in a short amount of time and get data. Is the air /fuel reading 14-15? If so that is way too lean. Should be 12.5-13.1 or so at wot. Might be some power to be made with more fuel.

440 9.5 compression, 525 lift cam 110 lob 237/230 1.6 rockers
Edelbrock RPM'S match ported to intake (BFD)
541 HP 586 TQ Stuska Engine Dyno
Chassis Dyno 344 Yup 344 okay what ever

Car runs 11.60 @117 1/4 mile Famoso Race Way

That's the response I was looking for. Thanks. The car really doesn't feel underpowered.
At wot the AF ratio was around 13,3 so there's indeed something to win.
There's no track around here so I think for now I 'll leave it as is abd just enjoy it.

All dynos are only tuning aids. Nothing more. Different shops and operators treat things differently. Sometimes the engine is not up to temp. Sometimes there are no parasitic losses like there are in a car chassis. Or special race car headers, and no full exhaust system behind them to enhance power. There's a bunch of ways to tweak the output. So it's always the true picture by taking the mph and weight and measure the speed over a measured distance. That tells you what it's actually making for steam, in your car, with all the "stuff" that it's supposed to have. You can't fudge the track (unless you have a good tailwind...lol). I just shake my head at pro shops posting huge numbers. Understandably they sell work but give me track results. That's the only thing that matters.
