Now that the car is all leveled, I'm getting ready to make the rear axle move "cuts". We are going to do ala'snoke method.

I'm trying to figure out EXACTLY where to cut across the trunk. I want to keep the stock gastank in its orig. position when done. the A body rear cut across the pan is different than with the B bodys.

The main differences is that there is the frame rail, and a second outboard "rail" where the rear shackle goes through.. There is also a back cross piece, where the trunk floor is spotwelded to.

My guess on the cut back section cuts (behind the wheel only). Vertical cut down through the qtr. and trunk extension behind the rear wheel arch. Then cut along the top edge (coirner) of the trunck extension, back just behind where the shackle goes through the rail. Then across the back of the trunk, curving around the filler pipe "U".

the green "rail" is where the shackle is attached to. The blue "rail" is the rear frame rail. The red shows a proposed cut line (down through the qtr. panel, and vert through the extension. Down the top edge of the extension, then through the 2 rails. cut across, just in front of the spot welded cross support and in front of the "U". The yellow dots show approx. spot welds.

ALSO: what do you fabricate to hold the front of the gas tank strap???? THANKS!

Alright, no one seems to be responding to you and I don't really feel like I have the authority to answer properly since my altered is a wagon and is very different than your sedan. That being said, I think you are on the right track with your cut lines as marked. One of the most important incisions being that you stay behind the spring perches and you have this marked as such. It took me a long time to make my first cut but once I got over that hump it was a bevy of sparks and mayhem. Check your lines, confirm that you're level and cut it up.

I saw a few picts that 805kid posted on the FABO site. They clarify the rear cuts.

One "unknown" is where the C pillar comes down onto the outer wheel tub. I'm not sure how to brace that one up once its cut free from the wheelhouse. Maybe Dale will let me know. Thanks Pat.

Could always look at the pics in my Ideas thread, but then again, what do I know.

:thefinger::thefinger::thefinger::thefinger:And what do you have to add there smart guy?Have you done one,oh wait you raced against one once.Better post photos of that huh.
Don't you still have some grinding to do??????:bootyshake:Your doctor called,he said you have TOO MUCH iron in your diet:munky2:

We have the trunk cut drawn. The car is level, right to left across the length of the trunk pan and the bottom of the frame rails.

Front to back? another story. We are absolutely level with a 2'er on the sills, below the doors. So I ASSUME we are level. but looking at the side view, the @ss end seems low, and the side trim is certainly not level.

With the door sill level, the top edge of the qtr window opening is NOT level, but low in the back, leaving me to believe the door top would also not be level.

Any other reference points to try to find front/back level? lines are easy to redraw. Here is some picts. Note the side view cut line (level) and the qtr. which is obviously NOT level.

I wish I had my car magazine collection here. It's stored up north. I have early 60s issues and I clearly remember and article where they go through the process of building an AWB car. Showing you everything done. Even pictures up on a lift.

Was probably an old Super Stock magazine. Maybe somebody on here has an old magazine collection and can search for you

edit:Called friend and told him to look through them and see if he can find it. He's in Toms River, NJ

rapidtrans: thanks, I read the post and have the report. I also have Steves' book and DVD. However, there are little details that are different between the A and B bodies.

funnycar65. Yes, I like the contour rear cut better. It will make patching the pan much easire. Although 805moparkid did a great job on his rear trunk pan!

I'm going to level out the full underside rockers and see where that take me. If level? that good enough for me to start a'cuttin....

Mike

Nice part is,if you look at it from the underside you can use the seam were the floor and rear body panels meet.Gives a nice straight line other then were the filler neck for the gas tank comes up.
