Hi Folks, Ready to put in the Steering Column. Any Tips from those who have done it before? Thanks in advance, B.

agree with mquinn66, it is very straight forward job no issues, replace the bottom bushing on the tube and gasket a new gasket

That firewall gasket can easily be cut from the thin foam used for shipping.

Thank you folks, One more question. Is the Steering Rod that is exposed in the engine compartment and hooks to the Steering Box painted? If so, what color, please?

Thanks B.

Got it in. No big issues, used a 5 gallon Paint Bucket to rest the old Steering wheel on to line things up. Thanks for the tip on making a new gasket, done and dusted. Now, I have some elec gremlins to work out. Did I mention I had elec work? :). Best to you all, B.

What did you with the shaft paint issue?

Anything I see that appears to be bare or non shiny plated metal gets a coat of Loc-Tite rust neutralizer.

Thanks for asking. I had a look at a bunch of the Resto pics on the site. The shaft colors are all over the place, so I painted it Semi Gloss Black Engine Paint since it is right by the exhaust Manifolds. When I went to clean it, there was a lot of surface rust on the shaft. Once I got it really cleaned up, it really did not look "new" so I put the paint on it. Since I painted the steering Box "cast iron" engine paint, I did not want to go to Cast on the Shaft. Here is a shot. Best, B.

Are you going for concours show quality stuff?? If so, iirc, it's flat paint. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. There was one guy here that knows for sure but is MIA lately.....

New, those parts were bare steel. I find if I glass bead steel followed by a buffing at the wire wheel it will appear close to new.

The shaft on my Belvedere is showing minor rust so I'm thinking it was never painted.....

Mike, Thank you and that is what I expected, But...., I decided to put some paint on it. This car will be DRIVEN, so Concours, not so much right now. Close to correct, you bet. The guy who bought this car as a DEMO is now 80 (father in law). He has been married to the Mrs B for 60 years. This was their Grocery Getter, vacation taker with trailer, and every day driver. We want to make this car look as he/she perceived it to look when they brought it home. It might see World of Wheels as its big show, otherwise Show and Shines in its future. So far, I have not seen or heard that our car is a BIG premium item (even though 60 something were made, Rare vs Desirable), so I say, why not enjoy it?? But again, THANK YOU for the input, I do appreciate it. Am I looking at this incorrectly?? Best, B.

Hey man, it is your car! I will add that on bare metal parts like these I coat them with Ever Brite to keep that new appearance for the rest of my life-anyway.
Mike

Any untreated bare metal will eventually rust.

That's why I use the Loc-Tite product.

It's basically a clear coat that has a rust neutralizer.

Any rust you miss will turn black and not really detract from the bare metal look unless there is a LOT of it.
