Question for the VIN guru's regarding my car, 1966 Coronet. As best as I can tell from the VIN, WP23E65****** (W) Dodge 117"/118", (P) Premium, (23) 2 Dr Hardtop, (E) 6 - Special Order, (6) 1966, (5) I have no clue, then a 6 digit assy number.

2 Questions: Does anyone know what "6 - Special Order" means?
and, What does "5" mean in the 7th position, shouldn't that be an alpha designator for the assembly plant?

Thanks in advance

E= 361 engine

5= LA California assy plant
Alpha assy plants started in 1970

Thought that was the misprint bulletin. E is actually a 318.
Or else my 66 is finally a 361!

Yep. E is 318 in 66.

As noted the 1966 FSM is wrong.

The same error is in BOTH the Dodge and Plymouth FSMs for 1966, so folks know.

Thanks for the education on the 7th digit in the VIN. Curious about the 6th digit being "special order", does that mean the 318 wasn't normally available in the coronet 500, but someone really wanted it?

6th digit is year
7th digit is plant

6= 1966

IIRC special order would be on the fender tag.

"Regular" order is "u 1" IIRC.

IE- someone ordered and optioned the car, rather than being a sales bank built car.

"Special" order suggests the car was ordered with something not normally available in the option book for that model.

Sorry. I miss spoke, the 5th digit "E" in my VIN was the one in question. I attached a pic of the paper I was using, and it says the E in the 5th position = special order. I don't have the fender tag for my car, so this is all I got to go with, just trying to learn a little about the cars history and where it came from. Seems like there's a lot of different info out there for pre-70's cars

Someone just smashed a bunch of different years info together. Ditch that whole article and look at 66 info only.

That looks like a 1970 engine VIN digit chart.

I believe we addressed the OP's main concern way up at the top of this thread...

...several times.

Here it is again-

There is an error in the 1966 factory service manual.

The correct VIN code 5th digits are as follows-

C- 225
D- 273 (all 2 barrel engines in B body cars)
E- 318 (all 2 barrel engines)
F- 361 (all 2 barrel engines in B body cars)
G- 383 (all 4 barrel engines)
H- 426 Hemi

Did we ever get to see the whole car?

1) Your inbox is full ;)

2) For model year 1966, there is a 383-2bbl.

The G VIN code in '66 is confusing as one has to look at the full application to help determine which carb was used.

All '66 B body G codes were 383-4, but the G code was used for the C body 383-2 and 383-4.

Check the library at Hamtramck Historical.

Thanks everyone, again, for the education. That VIN code list went into the trash. This is a pic of the motor going in, this past fall. I'm still working on wiring since there wasn't anything to start with. She looks rough but it's solid, just in primer right now.
