Does anyone know a source for a bulkhead fitting for my 71 charger. Amp meter wiring has cooked the fitting, and it needs replaced. Ant help would be very appreciated.
You should just use your old bulkhead connector and drill out that cooked pin, replace the wire from the alt to the ammeter, run it solid (no splices or connections at all) - all the way through the drilled out bulkhead connectors and hook it up to the ammeter. Those connections are what build up resistance (like yours did) and burn down cars. It's too much power for those weak bulkhead connectors.
That's what I do PLUS I run a NEW, separate, 10 gauge wire from the alt to a 12 gauge fusible link hooked up to the starter relay. A "path of least resistance" that lightens the load on the whole ammeter circuit yet still allows it to have power and, from there, power to the dash.
I've wondered about that fix. I think it would be better to drill a new hole altogether, put in a thick grommet, and run the wire through that instead of through the connector. I wouldn't work if you're obsessed with originality, but if you're not I think it would be a better and safer fix.
71 and laters Bs ( same ones as Es ) firewall blocks are not being reproed and sold individually like earliers Bs ( same than all As ). Just harnesses ends, but not the firewall blocks
but IS TRUE that could be a good time to make the terminal bypass upgrade. THAT'S the weakest point of the charging system, specially having factory poor output alts.
AND at the time, get a better output alt, which can be an earliers 80s 78 amps alt to keep your stock Mopar setup. YOU'LL NOTICE the difference
you can buy the firewall blocks seperate, I can't remember where I saw this, BE&A? you can buy the firewall block with the complete harness from yearone, but its pricy as hell, I just did the write up on this, this year. :
