Hi,
since this is my first post in this forum I want to say hi to all the mopar enthusiats in this forum :)

We are working on restoring our '74 Roadrunner (360) here in germany. The interior is completely deteriorated. The car originally came with jade green interior which we already started to redye to be completely black.

Now we are about to order the seat foams and seat covers and I have to say that we don't like the 74 seat covers (with the buttons) and would love to use the 71 covers which look much nicer. Since we are on a budget and shipping costs to germany are really high, we came across PG classics interior parts. Pricing and shipping to germany seems a bargain compared to legendary.
My plan now is to get the following:

- 70-71 seat foams ( http://www.pgclassic.com/product_info.php?products_id=783 )
- 71 covers ( http://www.pgclassic.com/product_info.php?products_id=287 )

Does anybody know if these will fit our 74 bucket and rear bench seat frames?

Additionally, what are your experiences with PGC?

Thx

Welcome!

I looked at the link for the 70-71 seat foams....mainly because I've never seen them offered before. One thing scares me right off the bat...they list them as B-body, then list Challenger as one of the possible applications (Challenger is an E-body, which isn't the end of the world, but I believe there is enough of a difference in the seat frames to make them not interchangeable) This goes for the Duster too, which is an A-body car.

It looks like they are trying to market them to as wide of an application as they can. Like they looked at all the bucket seats from that year and said 'close enough'. I could be wrong, and maybe these do work (they DO look close to the 71/71 seats), but I'd contact them and make sure they will work, or at least find someone that has used them.

All that said, they do look close, and the price is good...and if they are really universal enough to fit that many cars, then they 'should' work on the '74 as well.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

I had very bad luck with dashpad from PG, do not know about foam. I got my covers for my charger and cuda from Legendary Interiors and they look good.

No, 70-71 foam and covers will not fit a 74 frame.

welcome to the forum.

Thank you for your feedback!
If interpret this correctly, I can not use the 71 foam on our 74 frames. PGC also offers the 74 foam, but I don't know if I could use covers other than the corresponding ones for 74?!

When we bought our RR there was a plastic dashcap in the trunk that we are planning to use. I have no clue which manufacturer it came from. We plan to photo-document the project very closely and I will post some pictures soon.

The deluxe interior seat covers (w/o buttons) were offered from 71-74 in the B-Bodies. The 71 seats are only different in that the backs do not have the moulded in hinge covers and use the pot metal hinge covers so the frames may be different than the 72-74. The 72-74 frames should be exactly the same. Order deluxe covers and foam for a 72 seat and you should be good.

E-body bucket seat frames should be the same as a 71-72 B-Body as the E-Bodies share the same structure frome the front seat area to the front frame rails. The only difference is the firewall.

do you mean to order the 72 to 74 foam and then use the 71 seat covers ??

I called PGC yesterday and asked about the 71 covers and using them on the 74 foams. They said also they would not fit. So I went ahead and ordered the 72-74 foams and the 72/73 covers (http://www.pgclassic.com/product_info.php?products_id=290).
They are not as nice as the ones from 71 but at least they look like the ones that came originally with the car.

Thanks everyone for your input, I really appreciate it.

If you scrole down to page 29 on this site for 72 roadrunner/satellite http://www.rnbrestorations.com/usa/LAI-PDFs/ChryslerCatalog.pdf
you will find 1972 covers that look like the 71's
Im in the same boat as you...im thinking order the 72 to 74 foams (wich i dont see in this site ) and then order these 1972 tuck and role covers..
What do you think ??
anyone else please chime too on your opinions

The deluxe 72 covers have the same pattern as the 71 deluxe covers but the 72 covers will work on the 72-74 frames. Order the covers and foam for 72-73 seats with the deluxe interior.

The all vinyl 71 deluxe covers have exactly the the same pattern as the 72 all vinyl deluxe covers with the exception that they will only fit the 71 frames. The only 71 covers that were different than the later covers were the cloth and vinyl covers which were not available in 72.

Thank you Thank you !!!! :sunny:

I would have to reccommend that you at least talk to Legendary. I have never heard a bad thing about thier seats and many consider them to be the industry leader.

Great...I've got a set of black/orange seats that I bought about 12 years ago and now I can't remember if they were the 71's or 72's. I'll have to see if the invoice is still in the box.

Thank you for the info though!

I believe the orange and black covers were only offered in 71. The easiest way to tell the difference between 71 and 72-74 seats is that the 71 seat have removable pot metal hinge covers on the sides with a button built in to release the back. The 72-74 seats have one piece plastic backs with the hinge covers molded into the back.

Ahhh! that does help.

I do believe the covers I have are the '71s as that was the car I planned on building...so, my understanding is that the 71 covers will only work on the 71 seat frames with the correct 71 foam (if you can find it)?

I've bought so many parts cars and misc parts over the years, I forget what was really 71 and what came off a '72. :)

So your saying that they used 1970 seat frames in 71 B's but for 71 E's (except the early ones) they used 71 frames??

71-74 hardback seat frames are the same for E, B, and A Bodies. The ones that they used with the softback are not the same.

No, 70-71 foam and covers will not fit a 74 frame.

71 Foam and covers WILL fit a 74 frame as long as it is the hard back version no problem. 70 seats are a different story.

Okay, so to further my education, were the softback/hardback seats determined by trim level/model line, or, in the case of the 71-up B-bodies, did they have hardbacks in some years, and softback in others, or could you get either in any year (71-74)?

Thanks!

My only experience with softback seats has been 73-74 cudas and challengers. I dont know if it had anything to do with the year, model, options. All the late b-bodies I have run across have been hardback versions but I would assume softbacks have ended up in b-bodies as well. I always thought it was a late model deal as they were moving away from the hardback style, but hardbacks did find their way into volares and aspens in 76.
