Ok. Where to begin. The governor blew out the side of my tailshaft so I had J.W. Performance rebuild transmission. After installing with a new deep pan with temp gauge the Hurst Promatic 2 I had installed with it wouldn't shift into low all the time (prob 80% of shifts). It would stay in second and then shift into third like normal. I had hurst rebuild the shifter due to the appearance of worn teeth on the ratchet gears of the shifter. The throw oin the cable was about 1/4" too short. Same problem persisted so I replaced it with a Winters Sidewinder gated shifter which has the fulcrum set up. This has plenty of throw in the cable it just won't start out in 1st gear. It seems to start in second until it hits about 160 degrees or so. After that it seems to work good. Is it a case of just having to let it warm up that far or is their something wrong with the valve body? J.W. Performance seems to be a good company so I wouldn't think it would be that. Please help.:angryfire:

1st I have to say I'm not a big tranny guy, just a gearhead/racer...LOL...., Is it a manual Valve body or Auto ??, do you have the Throttle Pressure Valve linkage, still hooked up & adjusted properly ??, if it's auto shift still, possibly 1st/reverse band out of adjustment, loose not keeping in 1st gear long enough, pull pan & readjust, or possibly the second gear band too tight/out of adjustment, out side of the main body, easy to get too & adjust/check, they will shift so quick, if it's not a manual valve body {especially with rear band apply type, to save the overrunning clutch from granading, for full manual}, you wouldn't hardly know it shifts, from 1st to second, if it's auto mode & the TPV is not on &/or adjusted correctly... What kind of fluid are you using ??, what kind of line pressure ??, do you have a trans-cooler or at least looped the line so it can circulate properly ??, I highly suggest a quality high flow trans filter & checking the line pressures & a quality trans cooler/heat sink, of proper size/flow for your intended use, heat is the enemy for sure, maybe the wrong length transmission gear shifter linkage for your particular brand/style of shifter, they are sensitive in adjustment, for sure....There is a great book on the subject of Torqueflites... "Torqueflite A-727 Transmission Handbook" HPBOOKS-1399 Munroe author, I highly suggest purchasing it, great information for modifications on Torqueflites....

Actually, I would 1st call JW Performance Transmissions {especially if they built it} & tell them it's not working correctly, what the symptoms are & ask, what do they recommend ??...

Thanks everyone. It is a auto with a full manual valve body. Forward pattern. I currently have a TCI cooler installed that flows after going through the radiator. It keeps it at about 190 degrees to 200 degrees in traffic. It seems to me that it doesn't really matter how long the cable is as long as the gates are set up correctly on the shifter. And the cable has enough throw in it. Correct? (sorry kind of new at this) When I installed the cable I would shift into each gear get under the car and pull the pin to ensure that the cable was aligned with each gear. I called J.W. Performance and they are the ones who told me to get the Winters shifter. J.W. Performance seems like a reputable company and they dyno the transmission after being rebuilt. And it seems like clockwork. Once it hits 150 degrees it shifts fine. I use J.W. Performance fluid.

I'm guessing you have a sticky shift valve, this may work itself out over the coarse of time but if not have JW give the valve body another once over.
