Well I was stabbing my 727 back onto my 340 block and made a bone head mistake. It was in a bind and I splintered (cracked) the bell housing of the transmission(recently rebuilt). (I was not even torquing it down) but either way it happened and I am now sick to my stomach and not sure what to do and wanted opinion on the options I could do.

1.) I have been told that it can not be repaired as it will not be as strong due to it being aluminum and would be better off getting a new one. The reason for wanting to fix it is it is the original and it was recently rebuilt. If anyone has ever fixed something like this or think it could be fixed, I would love the input. I have attached a pic too.

2.) try and buy another small block 727 and have it rebuilt. No shop i have called will switch any parts from my old to the new one and I can't say I blame them for liability issues. while I am mechanically inclined, I have never rebuilt a transmission and not confident in my abilty to do so. most places are quoting anywhere from $900-$2,000

3.) Buy a new one online and this seems like the most logical option at this point. But the big question is where and whats a decent price? There are a million places online and hoping someone else has gone through replacing one themselves with good results. I don't need a super hd transmission but I want something that can handle up to 400-500 hp range just in case I ever decide to go crazy on the engine.

Any input would be much appreciated.

I am not sure about the strength issue but a skilled TIG welder should be able to help. Contact a couple of welding/fabrication shops for an opinion.

When I had ground a water leak in my 340 Edelbrock heads I thought I was screwed also(exhaust manifold clearance). I got it welded with no issues other then some extra days work. My vote is to find a professional welder and Tig or Heliarc it.

edit: do you have a old block they can weld against to line up all the parts?

I agree as well. An experienced welder should be able to take of that.

I wish I had another 340 block but unfortunately I don't. I took the advice and called a welder and its something they think they can do fairly easy. cursing while taking it out again and $50 bucks beats cursing while taking it out and $2,000 any day,. HAHA. Thanks for all the advice guys!
