Took my roadrunner for a drive today, started off fine then got a huge lag from second to third, on the way back home I lost 3rd gear completely, fluid does not seem burnt, had the transmission rebuilt back in 15 and it always did have a lag and seemed to rev up in between second to third, sounds like the tranny needs to come out unless anybody has any ideas

Do you have your kickdown linkage set to factory specs? Any pics?

No good flare on 2-3, it needs to come apart.
How much power? How hard do you run it?

Something happened to the high gear, forward clutch pack.

It sounds like you are on the right track. A pressure test could confirm your assessment. From your tale, the trans may have never been optimal. Several members here could get you a proper performing transmission, including me. Where are you located?

It may have had a torn clutch seal in the direct clutch when it was built. Or it has a worn or broken reaction shaft ring. Either way don't waste time trying to diagnose. Pull it apart.

Remove valve body and inspect it for cracks in the circuit walls.
While VB removed, air test clutches and servos.

FWIW, I had an issue where I lost 3rd gear, and found one of the fluid circuit walls in the valve body cracked. I was 200 miles from home at a friends house, and I JB welded the wall, and the repair worked to get me home. Might have lasted even longer, but I replaced the bad valve body.
