727 Problem with 3rd gear

It has a leak in the 3rd/rev clutch circuit and/or the frictions are damaged in that clutch. Look for broken stator support rings, worn inner ring surface of the front drum, damaged clutch piston inner or outer seal. The outer seal can get the edge torn on install.

This is what I was going to say. In third the front and rear clutch's are applied. The rear clutch is also on in first and second so you know its ok. The front clutch that is on in third is also on in reverse but runs a much higher pressure in reverse so if reverse works ok it may be because it runs much more pressure. No bands are on in third gear and make sure your throttle pressure adjustment is right as it will effect line pressure and can cause trans problems. But I agree with Doug as what your problem is now. Good luck with it , Ron
