727 question

My transmission is leaking from a plug above the rear of the pan. I don’t know what this plug is or what it does. I’ve cleaned it thoroughly, sealed it with some silicon, still leaked. Cleaned it again and put some aircraft sealant on it, still leaked. I need help fellas. If it makes

any difference it’s in a 1971 Charger, the matching numbers trans.

That is for the reverse/low band. There is an o-ring on the shaft. No pressure on it so normally a good cleaning and RTV will seal it. Other wise you need to drop the pan, valve body, and remove the tail shaft housing to remove the pin and put a new o-ring on it.

Dang I just had the valve body off to get to the kick down shaft seal. I’ll try again taking extra care applying the sealant.

The oil seal O ring seals it and no sealant will solve problem from outside needs to be changed

does that shaft move (rotate) or remain stationary?

It should remain stationary, but if the O ring is worn enough, it may be rotating some and causing it to leak even after putting silicone it. Just my thoughts.

Clean it with brake clean and compessed air;repeat. Then pack tightly with 1 minute curing right stuff gasket maker.

Yes. Right Stuff gasket maker will work much better than silicone. Sets fast and works great.

It can be sealed externally, but you need to lower the fluid level and / or get the *** end of the car well in the air. Clean it absolutely spotless and let what you are using to fully cure before moving or filling again..

Yes, I have sucked all of the fluid out of the pan and cleaned thoroughly. The last time it was coming from the top somehow, that little tang that hangs down from the tail shaft gets in the way.

Use a putty knife to apply the RTV. You can get in there.
