first a little background, the car in question is my 66 Coronet 500 with 383/727 and 323 sure grip, essentially stock. The only upgrades are a 650AVS2, Chrysler electronic ignition and a minor cam upgrade with no noticeable idle.
When i was assembling the car after the body work I went through the transmission for several reasons. The engine runs well but the trans would not shift properly. It would only shift from 2nd to 3rd in drive mode, no first gear. I could start in 1st and manually shift through the gears with no issue. so I figured I would take the valve body apart and look for dirt and scratched spools etc. I did see some dirt and minor scratches on the spools but not enough to alarm me.
Now here is where the issue is. During reassembly the springs for the 1-2 shift valve and the line pressure valve got mixed up i think. They both are relatively the same size but have different compression strengths. I can't remember which one i installed where.
So the issue now is when i drive it upshifts through the gears although faster then i think it should and downshifts ok as long as i drive it easy. If i kickdown it will shift into second but stay there and not return to 3rd.
The linkages are adjusted correctly.
Which spring should go into which valve?
Is the spring mix up causing the shifting issue or is problem somewhere else?

I think you may have answered your own question. Someone with more knowledge of valve bodies may have the answer though.

The low/reverse band applies in manual low. The OR clutch makes low happen in drive range. Did you have any issues with the OR clutch assembly? The line pressure spring is quite stiff and may not allow the 2nd valve to move back into start position.

If you are in doubt pull it out and check the spring placement. If you were using the FSM the diagrams pretty much show differences.

Maybe this will help, Throttle pressure (valve controlled by the kickdown rod) overcomes governor pressure to make a shift (pressure from the governor valve faster you go the higher the pressure) So all the shift valves have both pressures in order as they shift. Throttle pressure on one end governor pressure on the other. Amount of pressure is controlled by springs and diameter of the valve, Pascals law of hydraulics.

If it is still together put a pressure gauge on the governor port and run on stands in gear and accelerate slowly, the pressure should slowly increase until around 50 to 60 psi, if it does Governor is OK. Then hook the gauge to line pressure, start the engine bring to fast idle, move the kickdown rod by hand back and forth, the line pressure should increase and decrease as you move the rod. if those pressures are good you have wrong spring in the valve body, or a valve hanging, they should fall by their own weight with springs removed.
