727 trans question

Handbook... 727handbook.jpg

if i dont use a shift kit how will i get a quick shift from 1st to second and 2nd to third? 66sat are you saying the rear band isnt tight on drum in 1st gear? what makes reverse happen and what makes 1st happen? i looked for the info on u tube and google with no luck. i dont have to have the tires bark when shifting gears just need it to change gears without hesitation or slipping.i also noticed the kick down lever was wired back. i guess i want to be able to drive around town and go to the drag strip occasionally with the hulk car.any ideas how to use my trans that has a reverse valve body from another car? would i have to change out my shifter.i would be taking it out of a 71 rr that has a stock console shifter.i purchased the rr with the reverse valve body so not real familiar with it but it works and i am n ot planning to race the roadrunner so it would be a better trans for the hulk.just not figured out yet what to do about the shifter in the hulk car.

Check out a manual to see which components are applied for each gear. The rear band, "low/reverse" is applied in 1 or reverse, but not in D during "first gear" (that's how you can have reverse problems but still have 1st gear). The timing & shift characteristics are a function of the line pressure, band material, band adjustment, front band lever ratio, clutch material, clutch clearances. If you started with a trans from an HP car, I completely agree with Miller that with proper adjustment the stock valve body will give as good a shift quality as you need. All depends on the parts combination. I think shift kits are a crap shoot, might work OK might not. A properly designed, thought out complete valve body is a better choice IMO. Give Miller's handbook a look.

The rear band is only used for 1st gear decell and reverse. If the band doesn't apply it will "coast on decell" in 1st and have no reverse. Rear bands seldom wear out unless it's a plow truck. I hardly ever replace them during a rebuild. That being said if there are grooves you can feel in the drum it is probably gone down to the metal. Carl Monroes book is good. You can build a 727 with C-clamps, a vice and snap ring pliers. Any questions on how to do it w/o special tools just ask.

i have the book on the way ,really appreciate the advice and tips ,hopefully it will be back together soon..

I'll get the popcorn out.

Seriously...don't know if your mechanically inclined, or not. But, it's just a bunch of cleaning parts, looking at 'em, replace what's needed, blah, blah. Nuts and bolts stuff. Take your time, just do it right once. There's seals that can be a pain to deal with, and parts that need to go back in right...simply pay attention to what your doing!
The band(s) you mentioned, only have a thin layer of clutch material on them, fyi. There's plenty of folks around that can answer ???s, if you have any.

Also be very, very careful! If your 727 is in poor shape, you could actually enjoy bringing a pos back to life!

i repair appliances for a living and raced dirt cars for a few years but never rebuilt a trans . i think between me and fbbo the manual i ordered and u tube i can do it right the first time.i was hoping to find a easy fix but not this time. i really appreciate the advise .thanks
