727 Trans Speedometer Gear

Well if u can stick a small screwdriver in where speedocable goes & the gear turns then something is wrong. Maybe adapter is different length between years?

Yes, I have been looking at several actual parts. The question still seems the plastic gear number & it's contact with helical gear on the tailshaft.

If you look at the gear holder when installed and the car running in gear, on stands of course, you should be able to look into the hole and see the gear shaft turning. Use a light and watch for movement of the square in the hole where the cable goes. That way you can pinpoint where the problem is. I think I read that the needle jumped when you twisted the cable from the bottom correct?

Yup that's right, the needle moves with the gear connected while installed in the shaft housing, just doesn't get spun in the trans

Like RT K line said, fine out if grear turns ok first, then if it does, go to the the next connection and see if it turns, etc ,etc, and you already know the cable and speedo turn, so it must be down or in tranny,,like a soap opera ,we all want to know the end (where's the break in the chain) CHEERS,jim

I'll let you know the results! I'm waiting on the new speedo housing gasket before I go in there again. It's been leaking since I put it all back together:BangHead:

It's April- nothing has went right for me this month either.
I know right?! Everytime I fix one thing, something else pops up that needs attention! I mean, not that there aren't always things to do, but one leak after another! be it fluids, exhaust, vacuum! Sheesh. Aw well.. that's hot rodding, I always say....

So I got under the car again this afternoon to try to get some more info on this speedo gear mystery.

The facts of the case are these... The speedo gear has 30 teeth, is yellow, is in perfect condition, and not stripped in any way. The gear does not spin freely while installed in the housing and housing installed the 26-31 position at 6 o'clock. The speedometer needle bounces a sweep when the housing, gear, and cable are all assembled together. These are the facts of the case, and they are undisputed....

Is it even possible that the pinion or gear in the trans isn't spinning? I wasn't in a position to rotate the rear wheels to see if it spun in the trans.

B-II the "gear" on the output shaft is 'cut' in there, it has to turn if the shaft is turning. Does the car move when you put in gear? A little play on words- "A FEW Good Men" might be needed here, lol. It looks like everything is installed perfectly by ur pics.

Lol I love it! Very good catch Ol'Bee brother! I wondered if anyone would pick up on that quote! So yes I figured as much with that gear being cut in as I looked at it. And yes the car does drive when out into gear. I don't know where else to look for the issue. And I'm tired of draining and filling my trans just to poke around in that stupid hole!

I didn't know you should drain the transmission before removing the speedo gear. I didn't on my car and it didn't leak, the oil level is lower than that.
Hm interesting, you bring up a good point! I don't drain it per se, but about a quart of fluid pours out when that housing comes out. Perhaps I am too full.

B-II I understand ur getting upset, you need to sit back and think over everything from the beginning. From what I see it should work, recheck everything and get back to us.
