Hey guys. I'm looking at 1500.00 to have my rear end rebuilt. That's labor and parts with a truetrac and reusing my gears, 3.55s. Sealed bearings, no brakes though. Would I be better just getting a S60 at 2300? New

Well, do you need the Dana 60? How much power are you putting to it? 1500 sounds a bit high to me especially when you are reusing your gears. What is is included in rebuilding the 8 3/4?

For new gears 3.91, true trac, and tapered bearings he quoted 1675, With using my 3.55, truetrac, tapered bearings he quoted 1500. My motor is a healthy 440 with roughly 600 ft lbs. and around 500 hp.

That seems really high to me. I just had my rear end (sure grip) completely rebuilt with new 3.55 (changed from 3.23) gears, new strange axle bearings, new yolk, all new seals for $1000 tax included. If I had reused my gears it would have been even less.

do you need a lot of internals replaced?

Sure wish you lived closer to me!! Is the same guy quoting you on the Dana 60 too? Before I'd spend that much on the 8 3/4, I'd sure would be eyeing the 60....

Seems way to expensive to me. Easy to swap in a new carrier on existing gear set. An new 8 3/4 complete pumpkin with a true trac can't be much more than the quote, all new.

That's to much !
It's extremely easy to rebuild your rear just buy the parts and do it yourself I think the rebuild kit with no gears cost about $275.00 just pay attention to how it comes apart ! And tourqe specs!

Put a 8.8 in a 66 Barracuda, Posi, 3.27, bearings, shorten long axle to short size, aluminum driveshaft, factory rear disc, front yoke for 1600.
The A-Body pricing for 8 3/4 is really bad. Will keep the 8 3/4 in Coronet, because rebuilt 11 drum brake setup and the simple parking brake cables. Will not like the pricing for the Truetrac Differential, still in the shopping cart at Summit.

No kidding Cranky you could hook this guy up!

Just talked to Cass at dr diff. He said no way on the 8.75. He said with my torque I will scatter it quick with the factory cars only making 375 ft lbs. he quoted me 2590 axle to axle for a S60. Money money money.

I ordered my s 60 from cass about a month ago, upgraded to chromoly yoke, and aluminum cover, add 300 if you want powder coated, add 300 for residential delivery

3 grand well spent

Why not find a good 9 1/4 cause they're almost as indestructable as a Ford 9"

Did you dyno the engine to come up with those numbers? A lot of guys are running big horsepower with the 8 3/4 but weight is also a factor. A buddy and I ran a car low 11's @ 3400 lbs, 4 speed and launching at 5k and yeah, we shaved some teeth on a couple of third members. The factory HP 440's were making 375 horse and a decent more amount of torque. It just depends on how rough you are going to be with it and how sticky your tires are. And like someone else already said....they are not all that hard to rebuild especially if you're not going to set up new gears.

Rick Ehrenberg did an article on these a while back and I'd love to use one and keep it all Mopar but there seems to be a lack of options in diffs. Hell, you can buy the housings for about $50. My guess is by the time you do one up right the only cost difference is the housing. The nice thing about the Mosers site is you can price out a rearend as you'd like it BUT they don't offer that capability for a 9-1/4 even though they can and will build them.

Well down here in California, where everything is pretty expensive... Had my 742 housing rebuilt, new clutch Sure Grip, new 3.73 gears 1275 out the door... would have been a hair over 2,000 to take them the whole rear end and have it all rebuilt with new axles and everything.... highest cost is usually always the labor

Bought my '65 Coronet in "74 complete with the 426W, 2 broken 4 speed trans, 1 good one,(switched to a 727 cuz didn't think I could shift the A833) and a broken 8 3/4. Rebuilt the 8 3/4 twice because the left hand thread case bolts on the limited slip won't stay tight even with red Locktite. Switched to the Dana 60 & never broke another rear axle part in many thousand runs. Just my experience. I know there are many that have big power & still get good life out of their 8 3/4's. I stick with the Dana even with the added weight. My opinion.

Wow, then I've been living on borrowed time for 30 yrs. I've got a heavy car and my nitrous finger gets "the itch" pretty often. HOWEVER, I'm not running slicks.

What's actually broken on your 8-3/4"? If it's in the center section, they're easy to replace (besides the $$$, that's the #2 reason I haven't gone DANA)

The hp and torque numbers are from my engine builders computer program. It's broke in but not actually dynoed.
The rear is an unknown condition other than I was told it had a mini spool in it. I took it in for an overall health assessment and pricing.
