What is the proper torque for the pinion nut on an 8 3/4 rear end with the 741carrier? It said 40 ft-lb in one reference book and it seems to me that it should be closer to 240 ft-lbs.

40 INCH/pounds might be the bearing preload, that might take 240 FOOT/ pounds of torque on the pinion nut to establish.
Recheck your reference books.
Also probably more like 20 inch/pounds for used pinion bearings, maybe 40 in/lb for new bearings.

My ref. says 12-15 with new bearing, 6-8 on used for preload. 40 for pinion nut torque. I think that the 40 for the pinion nut is a misprint because it says the 742 needs 240.

240 is correct..

I put all my 1/2 IR impact will give it using red Loctite on the threads.....never had a problem in over 30 years of building them. And yes, bearing preload is MUCH different.
