The 8 3/4 rear in my car will roll backwards easily but rolls forward very hard.
I checked and it is not the brakes dragging it does it with the drums off.
When the clutch is depressed it feels like the brakes are lightly applied.
It is a sure grip unit. 1965.
I need to go double check but I'm pretty sure it is a 741 case.
The car sat for a long time.
Any recomandations on what to check?
Thanks.

I'll try to make time to put it on the lift and check.
If it is the shim style I can just tighten it right?

Yup, but I would pull it out to make sure no damage to the gears have occurred. It doesn't take much to chip or break off a tooth or two when things are not right.

I had the same problem as you with a couple of 8 3/4 rears. It turned out to be bad axle bearings on one side of the car. Can you guess which side? Yup, you guessed it, the right side where the adjuster is. Unfortunately, this means that your axle housing is toast. You will need to cut off the end and re-weld a new end on it. It is best to pay someone to do it for you and be adamant about them welding the axle housing up to the same length as it was originally. BTDT
