8 bolt crankshaft

I have a 8 bolt crankshaft in my engine and I notice that there as once a dowl pin used to guide the flywheel onto the crank but it has either been broken off or was knocked off! My question is can these be removed and replaced with a good one or was it part of the crank? The next question is how important is this pin? Once the flywheel bolts are torqued down the flywheel is not going anywhere!

Never used a dowel on either of my 8 bolt cranks.

That was probably for machining purposes.

The bolt pattern only allows the flywheel to be bolted on one way, right, just like a 6 bolt crank.....

Yes it can only be bolted on one way two of the holes are closer together than the onthers!
