Walmart has AC Pro for only $32 so I grabbed one and a small can and charged my rebuilt system and it worked great! Had clearance issues with the fitting adapter at the low pressure side connector as it points right at the radiator hose. I was able to mash the hose down to connect it.

Since my temp adjustment valve is long gone, I have the heater hoses connected straight to the core. Now I have cold air on one side of the diffuser and heat on the other (via the internal bypass valve being 1/2 open). Should I add a ball valve to the heater supply hose under the hood to stop/regulate the flow of hot water in summer or should I just connect the hoses and loop them? Does the evaporator need some heat or no to prevent freezing up?

I'd buy one of these if your not worried about correctness. This is what came with my Vintage Air unit, it's a simple electrically operated valve that you could just wire in. It's been a while since I rebuilt one of those boxes but I thought the internal doors would seal off the heat/A/C flow? You may need to look into your box, bad seal, mouse nest lodged in one of the doors or improperly adjusted cable? I'm sure someone with a fresher memory will chime in.

Thanks! I’ll look into that valve. I just rebuilt my box and the evaporator is caulked flush against the heater core where air passes thru both. The core has a bypass valve that when the ac door opens, cuts the flow of hot water to the core by 70/30 or close. The the regulator valve further mixed the ac with heat for temp control.

Gotcha, yeah you need something to shut it off.

Fortunately I live Florida where it’s cold for 3 months then hot for 9. I can close the valve in March and not touch it again til November. LOL!
