Hey gang,
I own a 72 Satellite 318 car and would like to add some torque/hp to my ride. I know a stroked and bored small block can be close to 400 ci, but am wondering about looking into a more modern engine swap. A 5.9 Dakota plant seems appealing, with fuel injection and a design specifically for modern day pump gas. Add the ability to bolt up an o/d trans for economy and this looks like a reliable and trouble free setup. Looks like there are enough of these around to pick one up without refinancing the house, especially when comparing the machining costs to get more cubes out of my 318. Any thoughts or advice on what I would need to make this swap a reality, or suggestions on other possible swaps are appreciated. The modern hemis look a little too expensive for now, but hemi lovers should feel free to add your two cents worth- especially if you can get me a late model hemi for two cents!

I haven't done a swap like this, but at first glance I would guess that your major issues will be wiring in the electronics to run the fuel injected engine, installing a high pressure fuel system to feed the injectors, and making room in the transmission tunnel for the larger tail housing of the OD transmission. Smaller issues will be drive shaft length and motor mounts, and possibly shifter linkage. Depending on which OD transmission you use, you may also need the transmission computer from the donor vehicle too.

I think it will be a pretty big job, but if you do it, you'll have something that not everyone else has. Good luck with which ever way you decide to go.
