It's mostly a Christian holiday observed the night before All Saints Day. The macabre part might have been a pagan holiday before Christendom took it over. I've also heard the theory that it's a night for the evil spirits to play before All Saints Day. In my old hometown, the whole week is celebrated as Neewollah. Halloween spelled backwards.
Most importantly and appropriately, All Saints Day is my birthday.
