Late 70's 440 in a 66 Belvedere. Does the alternator mounting bolt that goes into the front of the engine on the triangle shaped bracket go into a water passage? The old bolt is too long and is rubbing the alternator belt so I pulled it out to replace it and it seems to have some black stuff (sealant?) on it.

Cheers, Derek

Cylinder head ( no). Water pump housing may have sealant from water pump gasket on it. Do not know of any that should go threw to water jacket in block.

Real simple to find out. With a thin screwdriver, or piece of wire, run it into the bolt hole. If it does not hit bottom, the threads go into the water jacket...sealant needed.
