Hi All,

I think you may tell me what I already know, but I replaced the pulley on a new alternator I got a while back and threw it in the car. I’ve been getting some belt squeal every now and then, mainly when there is a drain on the power, ie night time.

I figured I hadn’t lined up the pulley with the others right. So while the radiator is out I thought I’d press the pulley on a bit further.

After pulling it out I’ve just noticed I have a lot of in and out play in the pulley shaft. No side ways play, just in and out.

Is this normal? Or are the bearing stuffed and in need of replacement?

Any advice?

Cheers!

In and out play? How much? And, how does it turn?

Got a service manual? If so, it shows how to rebuild 'em...meaning it will show you the specs, including endplay.
There's right ways, and wrong, to put the pulleys on, and yep, could do damage. Not saying that's what happened, without checking it out.

Fingers crossed for ya!

Shouldn't have any end play. The drive end bearing keeps the rotor shaft from moving in and out.

If you're contemplating pushing the pulley on further, you don't have it assembled correctly. The pulley should be pressed on until it contacts the inner race of the drive end bearing then squeeze it tightly between the rotor body and pulley. That keeps the shaft from moving in the bearing. That could be your source of end play. The outer race of the bearing fits tightly in the end housing and held in by a clip. If that's moving it can give you end play.

Yes, never thought about someone trying to press the pulley on without taking it apart to support the shaft, but that's a must.

This. I would say I’m an idiot, but I didn’t know any better. All fixed and back in.

Thanks for the help guys.
