Am I stupid for thinking...

Depends how much you like to be able to corner without fighting the mass up front.
If you ever drove a '65 up Corvair, with "no" mass in front, you'd see just how much a difference this makes!

I loved my Dart with 340, when you turned into a corner quickly, it said "Yeah!"
A big block must be "convinced" to change directions; it would rather keep going in a straight line.

do you like to go around corners or is this just a straight line thing ?
less weight over the front end means less understeer and better handling

and there's a reason the 340 was called the "baby hemi "

I like a car that handles. Wonder how pumped up I can make this 340 while still being reliable.

You know what would be really fun? Drift it around a corner or two!

Alum. heads, water pump, Intake & your 440 (670#)
is about or near the same weight as a stock 340 (525#}
give or take 25+#'s

with 100+ more ft lbs of torque & hp
if set up properly, handles very well...

more than one way to skin a cat...

so if you do the same to the 340 ?

yeah I like sticking up for the "little guy"

Yep you can even get a lighter SB,
it'll never be a BB thou...
I'd move the battery to the right rear of the trunk too,
another 40-50#'s better bias...

I'm not anti SB/especially the 340 at all,
he was asking about trading up to a big block/440
I was giving him ways to combat the arguments, help him decide...

I've actually built quite a few SB Mopar's LA & Magnums...

like I said more that 1 way to skin a cat... or bird or bee...LOL
