A buddy of mine just got a project he's been working on to the track.
500, 906 head
Turns out the 8 3/4 lasted about as long as we thought. Well, snapped the L axle..

So you think a trans brake was a bad idea

That car is so wide a pickup Dana with floaters might fit just fine! LOL

Brings a new meaning to getting beat by a car length!...

With that weight, and that motor..... an 8 3/4 would not have been my choice. But then I think you think the same...
You dont see many busted 8-3/4's... well I don't anyway. I did see a '65 Belvy with 15 wide slicks at the track this summer tho....sure enough, he had enough motor (and traction) to bust one.

My car, with half that weight and 2/3 the hp and a brake and 14" tires has a nine inch and spool.
I would advise your buddy to fix the 8 3/4, sell it, and put the proceeds toward a Dana 60.

He knows the limits and pushed them. There will be a D60 in there in no time. He crunched a D60 in his 10.0 D150.
so how fast was it before the rear gave up?
He ran 12.50s at 106+. It was the T brake that helped give it up early. He's aching for a 11.xx, so he'll be back. There's talk of victor heads etc, he has a huge procharger as well.
What a BEAST! Love it!!
It even has an old school phone/cb deal in it. He wanted to start ripping that stuff out and I said NO!

And I missed all the excitement!
I know far to well what happens with 8 3/4 axles and big cars! Took me 1 broken and 2 twisted before I smartened up and put the D60 in!

Back in ‘69 Chrysler was putting Dana’s in for warranty replacement on 3.91 8 3/4 rears in B bodies.

Here's some proof in the pudding shots...

Sweet, love the big ole Sea Body. Mine isn't quit as radical but it does have a nice 440 with a cheater plate kit for playing with Mustangs, Camaro's etc.
