I've been using a Powermaster mini-starter in my Bee ever since I went to TTI 2" headers probably 6-8 years ago, but from last fall into this year, I've been dealing with lazy, hot starts after driving the Bee. So far I've replaced the starter relay, voltage regulator, and negative cable from battery to engine block and the restarting issue is much better. Only thing left is the starter, but it's not making any of the telltale sounds of a bad starter. The cables to the starter are wrapped in thermal wrap and the starter has a heat blanket so I'm hoping that's heat protection. Initial timing is at 18 degrees, so I'm not overtimed.

For those using a Powermaster starter, have you had to replace it after a few years.

Got a load tester to put on when you crank? I’d check that before removing it. Good luck!

If you only have the problem after the engine gets hot it is definitely the starter. Not an unusual problem.

I have the same setup except 1-7/8" TTI's. My Powermaster starter is the #17519. A decent fit but has been working great for a few years. Call the tech guys at Powermaster, They know their stuff and will call you back.

PS. I don't use any thermal wraps and the tech guys do not recommend a starter blanket. Must be the starter is just giving up.

So I got a load tester, and the starter reads an initial 9.5/9.6v when I first crank the engine, and the instructions say is excessive load. Yesterday I removed the thermal wrap from the starter and after driving around for an hour or so, she still gave me the sluggish cranking on restarts. Therefore, went and bought that Dakota NipponDenso mini starter. Must be some quality in it if there’s a lifetime warranty vs Powermaster’s one year. I live close enough to Powermaster and going to take the starter and have them look at it.

I wouldn’t say a lifetime warranty makes them better IMO it means I’ll be changing it sometime in the future and more of a marketing ploy.. I’d check that wiring to it and grounds too.. They can test that starter and it may not really be any different then the Dakota one you just bought ... I’ve seen companies rebox all sorts of stuff. Good luck!
