I just bought a 67 short bed, 4wd W100 fleetside sweptline last week. Been looking for a while and it had to be a 4wd,short bed fleetside.

This one is a little of a unique animal in that it is a half ton vehicle with the 3/4 ton axles under it....ordered specifically this way. It's a slant 6, three on the tree and only has 18,800 miles on it...actual miles. Unfortunately the body is pretty shot....it spent it's life as a snow plow truck. The story is that there were two 67's ordered by a dodge dealership by the dealership owner...one a longbed, 4 speed .318, and my truck. The dealer also owned a steel distribution facility, and the longbed did a lot of service time running product...as well as plowing. Mine only sat on the dodge dealer lot and did snow plow duty there.

Here's the kicker. My truck came with 4:88 geared dana axles under it. I'm planning to restore it to original condition, however I want to put some type of overdrive in it. I do not intend to use this as a plow truck...only as a cruiser. I believe this is a "divorced" transfer case, so I may be able to put an A833 OD tranny in it. Anyone have a line on an OD tranny?

I had an OD A833 a couple years ago with shifter and all.....but foolishly traded it off for some other parts for my belvedere....well at least in hindsight it was foolish.....who knew????

Fortunately it came with a complete rust free california cab, doors and front clip, so that will help significantly with the body refurbish. The bed that's on it could be salvaged, but I'm on the hunt for a better candidate. I think I have located a rust free tailgate.

I'm also posting on Fortrucksonly and sweptline.org.....but it seems that there's a lot more activity on FBBO and you guys are a plethora of knowledge.

I'll post pictures once I go get it next weekend.

Very unique score. I can appreciate what you plan to do with it. Just wish I could be more help with your questions. Get them photos up! You know we like ALL projects on this site!

I've had quite a few

Joey FBBO's owners founder, has another forum for trucks only
http://www.fortrucksonly.com

my favorite was a 66 W-200 Long wheelbase 3/4 ton 4x4
that I put a short-bed Sweptside box on & shortened & boxed the frame
had Dana 60's full floaters front & rear, 6" lift & Q78 35" Dick Cepek Swampers,
a highly tuned 440 & I kept the truck tranny & tranfer-case with a PTO for the winch,
damn that truck would go almost anywhere...
I towed my race rig with it for a decade or so, had a few, mostly all Power Wagons thou

man I loved that ol' truck

I've owned 15 Swepties over the years, including a '67 CSS. I currently have twin '68 D100 LWB 4x2 pickups. Both are blue and white 318 automatic trucks with heater and AM radio. One is a sorta-daily driver, and the other is an in-process truck that is lowered 3" in the rear (reversed rear spring mounts) and a Sid's 3" dropped front axle on stock springs all around.

I've active over on www.sweptline.org/forums/ as are a few of the guys on FBBO and FCBO. FAR more knowledgeable Swepty guys there than here - after all, it IS a Swepty forum!

Just so you know, the '61 - '67 Power Wagons ALL had the eight-lug axles under them - that was how they came from the factory.

That A833 O/D trans is NOT what you want under this truck, it won't last, even behind the Six. Plus, it's a car trans, anyway. There are other O/D transmissions out there that will work.

And, if you want an eight lug DISC brake 4.10 Dana 44 for your truck, I have one that has been completely gone through, for sale!

Thanks patrick66. I've been surfing on sweptline.org looking at a lot of the posts. That's where I actually got the idea for the OD trans. I'm learning a lot so far on interchange parts between the years, and have just learned one more thing about the 8 lug axles.

At first I wasn't so fond of the 66-67 grille because it didn't appear to fit the hood line properly...but I actually now think it's one of the better designs after looking at all the others. I also like the narrow window in the back, but the rust free cab I have is a 68-71 wide window. Is the rear window narrow panel easy to transfer to that cab?

As far as other OD transmissions....what do you know of? For right now, I plan on putting 19.5 rims with tall tires on it to help tame the ratio just a little. It seems all the decent parts for these trucks are way out west.

Once I get the truck and start tearing into it, I'm sure I'll spend a lot of time over on the truck sites.

The big black window was the only window, beginning in the '68 model year. The big window was an option from '61 - '67. The metal filler panel CAN be transferred off one cab onto another, but it IS quite a bit of work, from what I've heard.

You might source an O/D 5-speed manual from a 1978 - 1986 225-powered truck. The O/D was available in those, but I do not remember the model of the transmission, right off.

Had a '68 Camper Special 383/727 2-wheel drive, power assist steering, and 4.10:1 Dana 60. I liked the auto shifter in the dash.

Car Nut...no pictures yet. I pick it up next weekend providing the weather cooperates.

patrick66....I think the trans you are talking about is the A833 OD transmission which is a 4 speed. They messed around with the ratios and 4th gear became third at a 1:1 ratio, and third became OD at somewhere around .73:1. They put those in trucks as well. As far as I can tell....that's the best you could get in the 70's - 80's. I don't know if there was anything behind a dakota that I could adapt to a slant 6 bellhousing.

I'll have to look into the rear window panel once I get the truck here. If it's drilling out spot welds...I think I can do it no problem....however if the rear window panel has rust in it.....I may have to rethink the rear window. Since it was an option in the early years, I'm not totally opposed to the wide rear window.

I had a '80 D150 with a slant 6 and that 833 OD, I don't see why it wouldn't hold up for a cruiser.

picked up this '70 Dude last fall dude.jpg

Did you happen to get that truck from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area?

Nice Dude, great score

That aqua colored/1971 Dude was mine. Original paint/48K miles.

Some pictures

I finally got it home last Saturday....it's not much of a looker but has potential. Although the truck only had 18,800 miles....it was a plow truck and spent it's entire life outside...in NW Ohio (rustbelt) so the body is shot. All the sheet metal on it will be replaced.....I'm in search of a bed now. Fortunately it came with a relatively rust free cab (floorboards need a few patches, but outer body is in excellent condition) and front clip (less hood) so I'm half way to having it fixed. I'll plan on doing the preliminary bodywork on all the pieces before doing the changeout so I can drive and enjoy the truck while that is in process.

I managed to lose the only key within two hours of getting it home....it's somewhere in the snow and will show up when it melts (which may be July the way it's going around here).

The dog has already called shotgun and won't let me drive it without him. It's right at home with it's 38 year younger sibling parked right beside it.
