Just curious, since I am preparing a 340 for my '72 Satellite Sebring Plus.
I've got as '67 Belvedere with a 318. I am seriously comtemplating a mild 360 for it. Then there is my buddy who is trying to talk me into a stroker crank for that 360 to make a 408.
Yeah, I know. The only thing that is holding me back is that by the time I build the motor and upgrade the transmission, rear end, exhaust, and possible the cooling, I would have a pile of money into a 318 car. You guys understand, right? Afterall I wouldn't want to be the first guy in the history of old cars ever to have more money into a car than what it was worth.STROKER!!!!! STROKER!!!!! STROKER!!!!!

While the above is true, it's also true that you could get the dimensionally similar 318 (or even a slant six) in the '68 Charger, so slipping a 340 in would be a piece of cake. Or pie. Or perhaps strudel. But it wouldn't be a challenge. The 340, and later 360, were primarily for the a body cars. Not enough oomph for the heavier b body cars during the heyday. Only until 1971 did they offer it in b body cars. During the gas crisis, we actually did replace big block with small block in a few instances.
The 318 was the bread and butter engine for the b bodies. But for performance, the 383 4-bbl was the starting point. While the above is true, it's also true that you could get the dimensionally similar 318 (or even a slant six) in the '68 Charger, so slipping a 340 in would be a piece of cake. I agree, had a X head 340 out of a 70 Challenger that I dropped into my 73 Charger after the 318 shucked the timing chain, wish I went with the 360.The 340, and later 360, were primarily for the a body cars. Apples to oranges brother. Stock for stock the 383 only puts out 15 horses more than the 340 but it does put out 60 more ft lbs. torque. than the 340. With that said and with the cars in stock build the Satellite weighs approx. 630 lbs. more than your Dart. No doubt your Dart will walk away from that B body... The 340 doesn't have the torque to get all that weight of the B body moving. IMO the 340 is a great high revving motor that works well in A or E body cars, not so much in a B body, I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir though...My 70 Satellite was born with a 318...motor was long gone when I got the car...I transplanted a stock 1970 383 in there when I built it...I should have put a 340 in...My 340 in the Dart will run all over this 383 all day long....There is no comparison...

Dang low twelves with a 340 Dart all motor? Got everything workin for those kinda numbers....pilot includedMy apple's suck...I should have gotten an orange...
I enjoy driving them both...I've come to the conclusion that you need a car for every occasion...
The green one will go 250 miles or wherever to a show and cruise around anywhere you want...
It probably gets 5 or 8 times more miles put on it than the Dart...
The Orange one will get you light to light and has more old school vibe...Ran 12.32 a couple years back with a few small issues...
If chit gets deep I can always go grab Dad's 416 Duster...
A little more attitude in a sleeper vibe...
Should be a solid mid 11's but haven't stress checked it yet at the track...
