Attention Californian's DMV is now taking application for Vintage Plates

I may have to redo mine next year to the Black & yellow era correct plates too...

Good luck. Hope the DMV has more info on this than they do on the YOM (Year of Manufacture) program. 8 trips to sort it out. Surviving 8 trips to DMV in San Jose is book material. OT, but finally got my "69" sticker off ebag from NY. Made-up numbers. Been displaying it for years. Never a problem. Oldest CHP Officers are 29 years old.

It took 2 trips to the DMV and I finally have the correct 1968 Plates for my 68. I was going to do the new issue but I was told they would be reflective and you would be able to tell the difference in the two. I believe that is the reason the old black plates are still way overpriced for a DMV clear set.

Next time I drive to the Downey DMV.

Bellflower DMV after Bell Gardens did not make me pay the entire fee, just make sure you pay the $45 and you are good. A separate question did you use the tabs to secure the sticker? I had mine powder coated and doubled them up and put it on the right bottom with the year sticker. I was going to cover the 68 sticker but not sure if I wanted to cover it up. The law does not say what to do as some people don't even get sent the two extra tabs.

No, DMV insisted that I put the sticker on right there in front of them.

Yeah I read that too about the plates being reflective like new ones, and was wondering if I cared or not still debating. But it also does say other than that they are trying to keep it as close to original as possible. I am missing one plate so to have two would be nice even if I don't run it, no cops have ever given me grief for it either. Not sure the program will even get off the ground needing 7500 people to sign up might be tough who knows?

There was just a news update on the CBS affiliate here in Northern CA/Sacramento of a chap that has been waiting now for his plates after being notified that he was going to get them. The totals on the link posted for the Black Plates show well over the 7500 needed to make the program work as per Gov. Moonbeam's initial requirements and the Black Plates far surpass that. So I guess it is going to happen for the Black Plates and not the others. To me it seemed like just another scam by the State to get more Tax Dollars out of the Public and if the program were to fail, you are not out of the deposit. So sure...on my '66 Ply Sat I would love Black Plates. If only I could find YOM/Year of Manufacturer original Black Plates and then pony up to get them re-issued...cr8crshr/Tuck

What about the rest of the people that have sent in their money are they out as well? Need some real facts on this before I send my hard earned cash to the gobberment post links to what you know please.

Just read the FAQ's and according to the site for the Legacy Plates, only those plates that receive 7500 pre-orders will be implemented. So far the Black Plates...'60's style plates...will be implemented starting after the 1st of Jan 2015. The '50's and '70's plates don't have enough so they will not be implemented. Still time to pre-order as well. Those that don't get in will get a refund of the $50.00 deposit so I was wrong about that. YOM or Year of Manufacture program will still be available so those that miss out on their specific plate can avail themselves of that program if they have those plates. Even though the plates are reflective it would still be cool to have the Black Plates for my '66 Ply Sat so I am going to get my pre-order in. My Brother 69a100 has an original set of Black Plates so he can use the YOM Program for his rides if he wants to. Otherwise they will stay on the garage wall with the other plates he has collected...cr8crshr/Tuck

Yes the 68 sticker has to be on for them to validate the plate as they also write down the serial number on the application. I was talking about the two tabs they mailed with the plates for the month and year. Some do not get the tabs, some do. I really did not want to put the sticker over the 1968 sticker I paid for.

No tabs were sent. I was gonna buy some, but they might interfere with the plate being lowered for fuel. Don't think they would work.

I also have seen plate frames that have the tabs built in the top. I was also looking at those.

Let us know if you find them. May need them someday. Don't let anyone know that the tag is YGJ-516.

If you mount the plate frame with the tabs up it should clear as they do not stick out as much.

This is the sequence of letters I used for plates, but it depended on how busy certain DMV locations issued plates. I wanted to share the issues I had going through the process to help others.

This damn well better not screw up my "original" black plates that I have sitting on my shelf waiting to go on my current project!!!!
