Attention Californian's DMV is now taking application for Vintage Plates

I would recommend you go through the YOM process just in case someone chooses your plate numbers and letters and then your plates will be deemed not clear.

Not to belabor the point but, I had to have the wrecking yard sign off the plates even though the owner removed them prior to crushing. It was luck that they cared enough and were kind enough to do so or YGJ516 would never have been registered. This was step four of eight for DMV.

I have the YOM sticker for 64' and one for 69' and the plates are original Ca. plates issued in 64'. They have not been registered for over 25 years when the car was sold to a guy in Texas and I was able to get the plates a few years back, hoarding them, lol!!

All I want is a new pair of black & yellow plates with current registration, I could only imagine you would want the exact year sticker on the plate if your car was a concourse restoration? That would make sense but for a semi daily driver? \ fun car

You need the correct YOM sticker to get original B/Y plates registered to your car, but the sticker is not used, just has to be shown to the DMV, then the currently used stickers are used in the upper corners. It cost's about 35 bucks to swap plates (original B/Y) and there is a special number for calling the DMV to check on plate numbers to make sure they are useable.

I have one of my original plates, I am assuming by asking for new legendary plates they will be issuing me ones with new letters and numbers and new stickers? What I am really hoping for is two new plates with my old numbers on them and new stickers. just so I can have new plates. thinking I might be out of my mind on this so see what happens.

The first thing you want to do is see if the plates are DMV Clear. It's best to call Sacramento at DMV (1-800-777-0133). I called around 9:30am and was put in a queue and received a return call so I did not have to wait on the phone. Then just ask the person if they are DMV clear, some do not know what that is so just ask if DMV has any records on the plates. If you only have one plate two are needed with the correct year sticker for the YOM application. You will have to surrender the plates that are current on the car. Make sure you pay $45 dollars for the application as the price went up. In case you only have one plate and want to get a reproduction made it would not work as the repops are aluminum and DMV will put a magnet on the back of them to check. If I only had one and the plate was clear I would go with the legacy process and use that letter number to get the two plates and put the original in the back. I was told by DMV that if the plate was not clear you could contact the owner and get them to release them to you. If that was not an option then the plates would eventually fall out of the system by there is no timeline for that. Good luck. Print the application fill it out bring old plates, YOM plates with correct year sticker vehicle registration proof of insurance and just in case pink slip. Be prepared that they do not know of the process and will have to look it up n a book. Don't be surprised if you have more that 2 or 3 people trying to figure it out. Be patient and make an appointment to save time. If you want to avoid this then just go with the legacy plates.

My 63 Polara is original Black Plate...
I just applied for my 67 GTX

(My 70 superbee is a Blue Plate)

This is what I was thinking of how it would go. we shall see

I may have to redo mine next year to the Black & yellow era correct plates too...

Does California make muscle car guys choke their cars with approved exhaust? They seem so strict out there about everything.

No. No State Inspection. Bald tires on new Benz's. Inadequate management at DMV. Every 5th car has expired tags. We represent the responsible few.

We have outrageous DMV rules out here designed for one purpose, to put money in the states tax pot to fund useless programs that the criminal just take advantage of and steal the money anyway. Other than that no restrictions on over 24 year old cars we can run anything except open exhaust on the street.

It looks to me if you mount it like this it would work. My buddy has a 69 coronet and it works.

No Smog checks or inspections. The ironic part is we keep our cars better tuned and maintained then most of the other cars on the road. There are also ways around un-approved exhaust upgrade issues with modern cars and ECM upgrades.

No open exhaust? What the...

Still illegal last I knew lol Don't tell John that I like his cuts outs!

I know I had a K&N on my F150 that said not legal in California, and i thought WTF

Frame won't work for a 69 Coronet. Nice piece, got it in the mail today. Will not clear if used at the top, and binds not allowing fueling if mounted on the bottom.
