Backup / Reverse Light Wiring

I have a Hurst Quarter Stick installed in my 69 roadrunner and I have decided to get my backup lights working as a Fall project. I have just ordered a backup light switch that is made by Hurst for the Quarter Stick. I don't have all factory wiring available being this car was pretty much a hull when the rebuild began. I was wondering if any of you had ever installed one of these backup light switches with an aftermarket shifter and if so, how did you wire it in? I have a wiring diagram and it states I should have violet wire from rear backup lights to somewhere. All responses are appreciated!!!

Backup lights are just a single filiment bulb with the socket doing the grounding so all you need is 1 wire from them to the switch,then a wire to the fuse box.

I have got the reverse lights wired in to the switch. The only hangups were grounding of one of the light assemblies. I know they should be grounded when screwed to the bumper but one of them is giving me a hard time. These bumpers are show chrome and triple plated. I will work on it some more to get a good ground. Also, The switch itself in the Quarter Stick takes alot of finese to get just right for the reverse lights to come on and off at the right time.

Reminds me that I need to take a look at my neutral safety connection one day. I have it disconnected now because everytime I plug it up the back up lights stay on all the time .....

I have the same problem, Original factory 4 speed but no wiring from transmission. I need to know where the connection is in the harness.

I found the connection, it was a plug under the dash 4 wires. White, pink, Orange and violet. After looking it up on a wiring schematic it says "Console Wiring" What the Hell does Console mean ? This is a Bench seat car. It's kinda funny trying to figure out what others have done to a 40+ year old car. And why. At least I have Back up lights now.:hello2:

I have to wire mine this spring to a B&M shifter, probably the same type of micro switch thats mounted on the shifter housing. I also have to run a wire for the shifter indicator light.:read2:

i just put a 4 speed in and i got the wiring for it wondering how it goes in and whats it connects to any helpp would be greatly appricatied

What year model we workin' on? You can get some help from the MyMopar diagrams:

In general, all 4 speeds should have a 2 prong switch on the trans, so you'll have to scare up a connector, or use individual push-on connectors. Run them up to the bulkhead connector, and refer to the proper wiring diagram for your year/ model, it will show you which bulkhead terminals are used. They may or may NOT be there, depending on the model / year of car, and options. Automatics, 69?? and later had the backup lights on the trans neutral switch (three terminal) so if the harness was for a late car, or a 4 speed, the wiring should be in the bulkhead. If not, those terminals will be blank, and you can either round up terminals, or run wiring straight through the connector.

very simple to wire. do this :

12v power ( from key on power) to one side of the switch on tranny
out of switch( the other side) to back up light pigtail sockets( to one lite then jump to the other light).
it will ground itself when mounted but make sure the connections are clean when mounting.

throwing in a neutral safety switch gets a bit more complex but thats the "gist" of it.

Drawings below are excerpts from this manual The drawings are crops. I don't know why they did not post in order

1--- Start with left top, "BACK UP LAMP SWITCH" Notice you have B2-18BK (an no 18 black) and B1-18V (no 18 violet) coming off the transmission switch

2---These go to the drawing to the right, "C" and "D" of the connector, which is the engine side of the bulkhead disconnect.

3---To the right of that is shown the engine side view of the entire disconnect for reference

4---In the drawing below this is the INTERIOR view of the bulkhead disconnect. NOTICE "C" and "D" have NOW changed color, you have B1-18W (no 18 white) and B2-18W coming into the interior of the car

5---In the drawing to the bottom right, this is the kick panel connector for the rear lighting harness. "C" from the Bulkhead (B2-18W) goes directly to no 6 pin on this connector, and from there to the rear to the backup lamps

6---See the post below. "D" of the bulkhead, B1-18W goes up and junctions at the red wire at the radio connector. This is where you get power to operate the circuit
