Need some help. Anyone have easy access to a dip stick and tube for a big block 727 that can get some measurements for me?? Looking for the length of the tube from the seat surface on the tranny to the rim (following the curves). also need the length of the dip stick itself from the bottom of the rubber seal to the end. Appreciate any help! :hello2:

I couldn't find my tape measure but I was able to measure how much the dipstick & tube extend from the bracket that bolts to the tranny ... they both extend 1" below the mating surface.

I'll be doing some cleanup this AM so maybe I can find my tape then and get you some better dimensions.

18.5" from end to end on both the tube and dipstick ... 1" of which recesses into the transmission.

Thanks this gives me something to work with today. So the tube should be 17.5" from the tranny up - that will help me confirm if I have the right tube. Then I'll check on the stick itself. This would mean that the end of the stick is fully inside of the tube while in the oil pan? That seems kind of strange but then again I'm not at all familiar with transmission internals. You would think since you check fluid level with the thing running and fluid moving around that the stick should be outside of the tube..

Another follow up question if I may - if the stick only protrudes 1" into the pan, how far up from the end is the full mark? I guess I'm wondering if "full" is right to top of the oil pan or a bit below - or up into the tube?

Full mark is 1.5" from the tip of the dipstick ... so the fluid must be up into the tube and above the mating surface. There is a o-ring that seals around the tube.

This is on a 64 727 pushbutton tranny if that makes any difference.

Interesting ... and thats with the motor running so the pump has filled the converter and all. That must mean that fluid sits well up into tube while the motor is shut down if I'm thinking of it correctly - or would it be the other way around ?
Thanks for checking all this for me dryheat!!

Ok, well now I'm really confused / concerned!! I measured my tube at roughly 21 7/8" from rim to where it meets the tranny (following the contour). My stick measures almost 22 1/2" from where it sits on the tube rim to the end. Not even close to the 18.5" measurement (mine is a post 1966 transmission)....... Best I can tell at this point it that I have about 1/2" of stick going into the tranny - or more precisely into the portion of the tube that is inserted into the tranny (which I don't know how much) I'm guessing that I must have some aftermarket cob job on this thing???

I will bring back this old thread instead of starting a new one. On my 440/727 the top of the dipstick is hidden behind the valve cover AND tricky to get in the tube especially when things get warm, so I'm wondering if anyone has used an aftermarket tube/dipstick which is longer?

Stock looks something like this:

Alternatives:

Another alternative, which looks longer in the picture but it's hard to get any specs such as overall length:

Thanks for any feedback!
