The battery expert has spoken once again
And no matter what you say, you won't change his opinion.
Don't set the damn charger on top of the battery, that is a main cause of explosions. Set the charger well away from the battery with adequate ventilation around the battery, use a 20 ft extension cable and set the charger on a workbench. Battery maintainers don't charge CONSTANTLY, once the battery is up to charge it goes into "float" mode and doesn't charge again until/if voltage drops to a preset level.
Yes, batteries create hydrogen gas WHEN charging, ALL of them do, even while you are driving down the road while the alternator is charging the battery. Keep the ignition sources away from the battery and maintain adequate ventilation while it is being charged and you won't have explosions. If you're really **** about it, you know who you are, turn on a fan blowing across the battery area to disperse the hydrogen gas and eliminate the chance of explosion. When the maintainer is NOT charging the battery, there is little to no hydrogen gas created. Also the damn maintainers DO NOT "Boil the battery". Of course any device, mechanical or electrical CAN malfunction occasionally (even humans) so there is always a small chance of something going wrong, you can even bang up your pop machine if you're not careful.
Even "maintenance free" batteries ARE NOT really maintenance free. You need to check the electrolyte level occasionally if you want them to last for awhile. Once a year may be a little overkill, but check and add distilled water as needed at least every 2 years if you want to extend the battery life.
Just some random thoughts on charging your battery from an idiot that doesn't know it all.
(and uses 18 battery tenders 24/7 for the last 20 years without battery armageddon so far) (fingers crossed).
