I have a, like new, Professional Products #90013, and have heard a lot of negatives about them. So I'm changing my mind about useing it.
It's just a mild build 440, forged crank. Probably useing the pre '72 pully, and I am looking at the 440 Source $99.00 stock style dampner. Not out to break any land speed records or the bank on this build.
Any experiences on what's out there...
 
Through the years I have tried the less expensive route,but that always seems to come back and bite,,,,,,,,I suggest is get the best you can afford:thumbsup:

I have used the SFI approved version from Summit Racing on some lower budget builds with good success, however, I prefer to use ATI wherever possible.
 
I have a 440 source dampner on my forged crank 440, seemed like a quality piece and engine is smooth and peppy. Timing markes at tdc lined up just right.
 
Factory forged crank dampner on my 440 and it's been ran hard on the street and dragstrip for many years. You can get one really cheap.
 
I tend to overkill, but I like the ATI, with a steel hub and aluminum shell.

Well, cheaper than the ATI.

If I was drag racing, I'd buy the best out there. For this build, a new stock dampner is all that's necessary. I don't want to take a chance on a used one. The 440 Source claims to be better than stock with the same dimensions. I'm just curious on what's out there.

The Professional Products dampner that I have, advertised SFI rated, bla, bla, and it isn't. Several ratings on it stated that they even fly apart! It's a $200 dampner! I'm not taking a chance on it...
 
Basic rule. The heavier dampner is always better for a street application. Want overkill? Replace the bolt with a stud and nut. Grade 8 at least. Same washer.
 
Ran a Fluid damper last 440 , for my 493 i'm using an ATI super damper (three ring) with ARP crank bolt , whats nice is the ATI damper is rebuildable. damper hub must be honed for fit.

I just purchased a BHJ sfi damper for our new stroker build and they fit up without pulley changes and alignment hassles as some of the top brands have do to dimentional differences from factory. BHJ looks great and have factory weights . Mine is the aluminum hub version that comes in at 6.8 lbs.
 
X2 on the 440 source. Just used on 512 stroker build. Going great!
 
For what it's worth, I've had the Summit balancer on my 440 and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and fitment. TDC is dead on, too. It has timing marks way on up the scale, so setting up the dizzy was a piece of cake.
The price was a bonus. Quite reasonable.

prefer fluid dampeners .
 
I've run the Pro Products ones with no issues except one. Since that one, I will only use an SFI approved unit. Brand doesn't really matter because they all have to be made well enough to get the sticker. You get what you pay for - and if that cheap one goes bad a lot of expense can come up quickly beyond a better balancer.
