What is the correct "sheen" for the black air cleaner on a '65 383? Gloss, semi gloss, flat, satin?

Went with semi gloss. Looks like I remember them way back when. Of course memory ain't what it used to be.

I went semi gloss also. Seems most likely.

these are all original paint, started as gloss black and worked their way to patina

I believe that the smaller air cleaners came into play about '68 or so. Even my 1965 273 2bbl Dart has a larger round air cleaner with a snorkel, but clamps to the carb rather than mounts with a stud and wingnut.

The smaller aircleaners where also delivered on 383cui engines in 1965. What seems to be the correct setup is not clear as there are also known cases of 383's with a large aircleaner.

For aircleaner ID check Nicks'Garage: http://www.nicksgarage.com/aircleaner.htm

Look closely at OG's picture. These are 4 different aircleaners!

My 64 Polara 500 383 had the small one. I'm looking for one by the way.

Wedgie, The smaller (lower restriction) round air cleaners (without snorkels) were standard on the 64-65 383/330 horsepower version. They were standard in chrome on the 64-65 Barracuda with the 273 Hi-Po engine. The larger version shown by hitit was standard in chrome on the 426 street wedge. Just FYI--good luck with the rebuild.
